Re: hybrid

You certainly look to have way more than enough flow rate through our usual 50/234V Villiers carb to produce a stoichiometric mixture sufficient, when correctly set up, to run any 40 Series 64cc power head. I’d also say the same if you were running it on an older 102cc Century head which also used t...

Re: hybrid

FWIW in this discussion I've worked out the fuel useage for my recent FPC Thames trip. I know the fuel used was 32.9 litres and the approximate distance 126.5 miles after taking into account various double backs towing rafted canoes and searching for moorings at dusk etc etc. I recorded cruising tim...

Re: Long distance Seagull trip.

Didn’t think anybody would want to rough it sleeping in their boat mooring up against steel pilings or tied up to overhanging trees. (The boat version of wild camping….) But LARS would have looked good along with August for sure! How do you fancy doing a circuit from Brentford Grand Union/Regents th...

Re: Long distance Seagull trip.

Yes, I admit I was pretty tired at the end. There are 44 locks on the journey and these took as much time if not more than the cruising. I did many of them on my own in the early mornings and late evenings before and after the lock keepers' duty hours; not the most pleasant or safest places to climb...

Re: Long distance Seagull trip.

Finished solo, 6 day trip down the Thames this week; enjoyed meeting up with Charles and other friends for afternoon tea and picnics en route. Put in at Lechlade Marina, Gloucestershire, and travelled upstream to the start of the limit of powered navigation near the Round House, then downstream to t...

Google frequently saves wear on my typing finger ....!

And once again it comes to the rescue:

First hit was from Texas; many others too numerous to mention. This one looks like it was a paper for a conference.

Re: How to use a DVM to check your magneto.....

Well , not really, the AVO 8 in all guises, does not match a Taylor Instruments Model 101 . Probably the best ever large scale analogue meter at 100kOhm/V. AVO had the Model 7 which was arguably the equivalent in terms of low volts drop analogue ammeter. Think Bruce must have gone fishing..............

Re: Bicycle generator on a Seagull - example shown

Exactly so, it will need rectification to get DC. Which is when the choice of diode arrangement arises. A single coil will give the waveform above. Most efficient use of that waveform would be to half wave rectify pos and neg pulses to separate capacitors arranged symetrically about chassis potentia...

DC output from a coil?
The diode rectification depends on the waveform(s) shape and to some extent on the design voltage you choose. Bridge arrangements are not attractive on low ( < 20ish) volt designs because of the power loss in the second diode.

Hi Bruce, I'm perfectly chilled! .....................Just relaxing while you explain the problems with a DVM not telling the "real truth" like an analogue meter when it comes to making those resistance measurements in the Fluke application note. I'm hoping we can get the explanation out t...

Re: How to use a DVM to check your magneto.....

Apologies to anyone trying and failing to download the Fluke link last night. (My fault entirely. I missed the first "h" when cutting and pasting the link; now fixed.) Along with the approximate resistance values for our Villiers and Wipac coils I should have also pointed out that a flywhe...

Re: Bicycle generator on a Seagull - example shown

Seagull magneto ignitions do not run on 6 or 12V. The primary resistance is around 0.2 to 0.3 Ohms. A little mental arithmetic with Ohms law quickly convinces that it is highly improbable that a peak DC current of 60A is flowing during dwell time. And that is certainly the case! My earlier post at :...

How to use a DVM to check your magneto.....

Fluke are a long established digital voltmeter ( DVM ) manufacturer so it is no surprise that they had their marketing people write up an application note using their products for testing outboard ignition systems. And it is quite applicable in many ways to our Marston, Villiers and Wipac magneto ig...

Re: SAE 140 oil vs 00 Grease?

That AMSOIL Semi-Fluid 00 Synthetic EP Grease lists in the USA as 342.65 USD per 35 pound weight tub, not including shipping. Weight for weight that is approximately 4.4 times more expensive than SAE 140 here in the UK when bought mail order with free shipping in 5 litre cans on eBay. (Slide rule ac...
