Saving Old Seagulls

I came across this interesting model boat on the internet.It was built in 1956 and renovated in 2003.
The model is 72″ in length with a beam of 20″.
The engine is described as a modified British Anzani, presumably a Minor?

A flexible borescope would enable you to see inside the block if you can find an engineering company that has one.

British Seagull Service Sheet No.1 states in paragraph 6 - 'Noticeable crankshaft vertical end play is essential' .

You could patch that tank, perhaps a strip of brass as a 'sticking plaster' suitably soft soldered.

Probably best to silver solder the patch,it will then stay put when you do the lead loading.

I've always wanted one of these but the one on ebay is missing a carburettor and engine cowl. I imagine that spares are not exactly plentiful, particularly the cowl.

The drive shaft should be in one piece.

Does your gearbox still turn freely? There must be a reason for the pinion shaft being rounded, perhaps a gearbox seizure?

This is what you should find if you remove the bleed screw from the cap. My guess is that yours is either missing the spring or it has rusted away. The spring tension obviously prevents the screw from vibrating loose.

I recently modified a cylinder that had rusted and leaking steel core plugs. After removing the old plugs I was able to drill and tap the holes to ¾ BSF and fit brass plugs from a scrap cylinder. As a bonus I was able to remove a surprising amount of rust and scale.

I notice that the gearbox on this motor is different to most of the SD gearboxes I’ve seen. Most seem to have oil nipples on the port side yet this one has the oil nipples on the starboard side which is the same as the OP that Skyetoyman is currently restoring. Does this denote a very early gearbox?...
