Re: 102 vs century

Is $140 a decent price for an intact 102? Everything looks good except the tank looks a little like it had a short run in with a ball pean hammer on top back. I was told it runs well, starts easy etc The fellow (who runs a sport fishing business)got it from a friend and he isn't interested in it any...

Hello I hope everbody is doing well I haven't been here for a bit but I'm still using my stalwart 40 plus clutched longshaft but still looking for a little more omph! I have a chance to purchase a early 60s clutched 102 (normal model not plus)and I was curious how it compares to the century? More or...

Re: Lower end oild seal cover removal

That's good to know THanks All the other Seagulls I've played with have had the rigid sheet in between As I'm just having my boat in the water for the rest of the month and maaaaybe October I went with a thorough cleaning and replacing the seal on the prop shaft. The one up above seems like a glorio...

Re: Lower end oild seal cover removal

I was just trying to get at the upper seal
Apparently between the top and bottom parks of the gear box/lower end on this model there's a paper gasket. I remember the other models being a single plasticky type gasket
is the paper gasket necessary? It looks like it was gooped in too
Hmm

Re: Lower end oild seal cover removal

Well decided I had to get it off today (uhh, the oil seal cover!) Started out with some gentle tapping around the outside with a screwdriver and hammer to loosen things up, Then some tapping from the inside/back with the same Then with the clutch fork removed I hooked a claw hammer under the lip of ...

Re: Lower end oild seal cover removal

Well, they're definitely tapped on and the gearbox housing around them makes it only possible to pry at the edge from the top.You can't even get at most of the sides to tap it and try and loosen it up. I tried a little screwdriver from the inside but that seems likely to deform the middle, I might t...

Lower end oild seal cover removal

I have a late 70s clutched long shaft 40 plus that's been regularly pissing out it's proper 140 oil On recommendation I bought some new seals off John and he nicely sent me a diagram too I've never taken apart a clutched bottom end but I've done the others So I have the back off, the prop off,etc an...

Re: Leaky bottom!

Well I used the word seals for a lack of better word Perhaps I should have said 'collars' the donuts with the pins in them I think my service manual is in my boat so I can't quote you the proper name Regardless, with the thick 140 oil, on my other seagulls, they definitely seem to stop a complete out...

Re: Leaky bottom!

yeah there's no way I'd be draining my oil after every use, especially as Charles just said there's supposed to be a caramel coloured emulsion of oil water in the gearbox. Blew me away when I first read about it a year or so back but that's how they're designed to operate. I'm just amazed at how qui...

Re: Leaky bottom!

I'm using the proper SAE 140, older stuff from an MG shop I mostly top it up rather than change it And admittedly since it's last time being empty ( a few months back ) I haven't looked at it (for shame It just seems it's leaving the bottom end faster than my other seagulls, which never seem to leak...

Leaky bottom!

My 40 plus clutched lonhshaft (late 70s) seems to leak the oil out of it's gear box quicker than any other seagull I've owned. It has gotten the most usage, but after it's recent little swim I just checked it and the bottom end is just full of water again .No oil! This is twice this past summer I en...

My Gull Likes to Swim!

Hi there I'm back, shamefacedly asking for advice! My trusty forty plus went for a swim the other day . My fault, not quite tight enough and turned dramatically while at speed, torqued it right off the mount, it was a brief swim but enough to shut her down for the day. It's been a little while since ...
