Re: 170 rebuild first start - wet! (Update: now dry)

If you read the manual carefully it will probably say if you have the mk 3 wipac CDI (White one) 35 thou & the mk4 CDI 25 thou.

Those gaps are 0.9mm & 0.6mm.

Re: 170 rebuild first start - wet! (Update: now dry)

It's there to prevent fuel drips from the carb landing on the hot head & sparkplug, catch on fire & not be seen as it's under the cover. To measure the head piston clearance try first with a 4 inch length of multi core solder & poke through the spark plug hole to the cylinder wall, rotat...

Re: 170 rebuild first start - wet!

That isn't the way you use RTV, a very thin wipe around the the surface of the inner ring of the head (the fold over portion) gasket, both faces, & the same on the outer 3mm strip to prevent any water loss. If it's squeezing out you've used too much & the excess could come loose & block ...

Where are you Andrew? BM?

If your in BM go down to Spanish Point boat club on the early afternoon of the 18th as it's the RISR, take the disassembled motor with you

Can you post a picture of the clean top face of the cylinder & head so we can access the surface condition.

Re: 170 rebuild first start - wet!

Bubbles would imply compression leakage, are you home or away, if in BM show it to Brian Lightbourne he certainly knows all about 170 powerheads & buy yourself a tube of RTV Silicon gue.

That looks wonderful, I was concerned on the net it looked like you were going to have torrential rain & a tornado somewhere around there.

I still like to do it again, before I get too decrepit & show all you Kiwis the error of your ways!

Thanks

Re: Baring back to life 2 Centuries downunder

If the slotted end of the screws are at the top, that screw would appear to be holding the coil cheeks down onto the base plate, so the part of the screw to remove is the head, drilling from the bottom just wrecks the baseplate!

Re: Century cylinder and gearbox, amal twin jet carb body

Seagull had their record month in the early 70's over 7000 produced, no one seems the remember the actual year & month but 3 or 4 members of staff from that period have told me similar figures, over the last 20 years.

I think they shut the doors in 1994!

Re: British Seagull 2 models

If you look at the inside of your flywheel you will see the cam (egg shaped centre) that causes the points to open & close. If you remove this cover & the spark plug & get somebody to film the points with a mobile phone while you slowly rotate the flywheel by hand you will be able to mak...

Remove the drive shaft tube from the crankcase first, then you'll have the bottom end of the exhaust tube loose, now wiggle it about!
