Re: Rare (?) Early Series Forty

Jacob,
Thanks for your interesting observation about the one on facebook.
Was it advertised as an LM, or did you find out its serial number? Was it a matter of you visually identifying it as an LM, without knowing its serial number?

Re: Little forty style choke

Adrian, Well spotted. That is just the part I need for my Little Model Forty, F201! Although the whole carb is what I am after. Did you ask the vendor whether he had any other relevant carb bits, or indeed the complete carb that this choke mechanism came off? I have a casting like that one that you ...

Re: Crankcases and Crankshafts

Pinger, John is obviously the person to answer your question in detail, about whether all series 40s have a two bolt fixing. But, the simply answer is no. I know that the Early Series Forty ie the F,FV, FVP, LS and LM produced in 1949 to 1957, had four studs from the crankcase through the block to t...

Re: Rare (?) Early Series Forty

Hi John, Its got the same tank as later LSs ie with the sharper edge rads compared to the early LSs. It has a brass 10" tiller as per the LS. It will be like your LS30524. How is yr FV? Hi Adrain, Are you sure it was an LM on e bay? With a replacement 'modern' head it looks like a later FV. Yes...

Rare (?) Early Series Forty

BS records indicate that approx. 38243 off Early Series Forty engines of the range F, FV, FVP, LM and LS were produced. However the really odd thing is that I am only aware of one production LM - and that is LM29941, which is in my garage. The LM is quite simply an LS with the smaller 10:21 gearbox ...

Re: SJM 521R7

Martin, The transom bracket on the left would have probably, I believe been nickel plated. Most, if not all of these smaller 4" ones were plated. The engine support lug, which it has been fitted to, was introduced at serial number 10000. So that would indicate it was fitted to FV (and possibly ...

Re: Water intake.

It is worth noting that with gearbox used on the LS initially had 2 water inlet holes. This was changed to 3 holes later - possibly sometime around 1953 or it might have been 1954. Presumably BS thought it was advantageous to make this change. Although the change might have been made to reduce the c...

Re: SJM 521R7

Thanks Charles, I am up early this morning (obviously not enough Rioja!), as I will be on my way very shortly to the coast for a boating session. FV5141 and FV3048 are in the boot of the car to be used on my dinghy. I know that I do not have to convince you, that these FVs are the most useable old S...

Re: SJM 521R7

I don't know when the plastic cotton reel was superseded by the thrust block and whether that was initially in plastic or aluminium. They are obviously so easy to change, along with the transom bracket itself, so swapping bits around make life difficult. However Charles L, you are wrong in suggestin...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke

John, Thanks for your good feedback on my suggestion for using a V Ring seal. As you say - not a cure, but a big help. Exactly so. I hope it will encourage others to fit them. It can hardly be cheaper or easier. Charles, As the moderator and the man who has to approve any suggested technical changes...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke

Charles, As I said in my post, the oil capacity of the (early) 10:21 gearbox is about 70ml. That is 14 fills from a litre, so even cheaper than you indicated. Although this can be further reduced, if one is so inclined, by letting the drained oil stand for a long period and then reusing the top oil ...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke

croweater, John, I am really pleased that the V Ring Seal, which I highlighted here as possibly much more effective than the standard soft washer/dirt seal in reducing oil leakage. How is yr LSs? Have you fitted a V Ring Seal to it? Maybe other people have experience of them? I have fitted them to m...

Re: FVP cases, crank, con-rod, piston

I am also interested in the con rod. Please send me a pm.

i would like to make a record of the serial numbers on the crank cases, so would be grateful if you could make a note those down here.

Thanks.
