Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Yes, thank you for pointing that out. I will now take extra care. Could water also get into the crankcase from the exhuast pipe? I expect it can. Anyway, as I said, I let the engine drain first. I also tilt it in various dirctions to get pools of water to drain out. Cast iron, especially when rusty ...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Is it too early to claim that one has survived 2012 ( especially as the world didn't end the other day)? Anyway to less important matters - to my recently acquired F201. After tank and plug cleaning and adding some old petroil, it started first pull, and (in inexperienced opinion) ran quite smoothly...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Thank you both for the info on the Amal carb. As you said it is not quite right for the F. Do you think, however, that one of the 359 series is the right one? I don't know how Amal's numbering system works - perhaps there is a 359/XXXX with a screwed on top to the float chamber and a top fuel feed? ...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

My experience is a little different.
FV1786, FV1867T and FV2682 are all fitted with tight fitting bronze rotors.
SJM35 is fitted with a black plastic rotor (it looks a bit newish).
I have also an aluminium rotor off an FV of unknown serial number.

Does this help?

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Hope everybody has survived the eating, drinking and talking frenzy that is part of Christmas. Yes, 170 psi is high, perhaps my gauge, as you suggest is faulty. I have seen set ups where the non return valve is fitted in the end of a hose at the other end to the head connection, resulting in low val...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Thank you all for your interest and advice. it is much appreciated. I am beginning to feel that I almost don't own this little motor, following the all the advice and comments as what to do and what not to do! I will, I promise, look after it and treat it as if it belongs to the wider Seagull frater...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

It came with an incorrect Villiers carb. Most of the paint is now off (except for the tubes - that can wait until I take the bottom end off). Yes, the paint has provided good protection. It doesn't look as if it has been fiddled with, everthing seems to me to be just so to my amateur eyes. Do you th...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

I have taken some photos of F201 in the 'as received' condition, except for removal of the carburettor and the tiller. F201 No17.jpg F201 No16.jpg F201 No1.jpg F201 No12.jpg F201 No9.jpg The system didn't seem to allow me to load anymore. I hope you will admire the lovely paint finish!! Look forward...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Oyster, Thanks for stating that so clearly. A great help to me. There are indeed differences (F to FV) in the cylinder block and head. Both are different castings. Quickly measuring both F and FV produced the following:- Both engines are assembled , so dims are approx, but shows the major difference...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Chris, I am sorry as I didn't acknowledge your reply stating the serial number of your seagull. The model names of these early small ones are a bit confusing. I was just after information concerning ownership of the F model. The F and FVP are both called Little Forty, but they are different in detai...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Collector Inspector,
That's really helpful.
looking forward to the numbers on the casting and any other info.
thanks again.
Hope Santa brings you all your desires! I might write and ask for a suitable Amal carb. Easily pleased and lacking imagination!

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

My original posting on this topic was an attempt to find out how many Little Model Forty F of 1949/50 exist. This followed my recent acquisition of F201. Does anybody know how many exist? Thanks for your comment, Oyster, on the problem of finding an original spec Amal carb for the F. I still don't q...

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Oyster,
I don't know what a 102 type inlet is. The F inlet is just like the FV, SJM and the other 40s. The only difference that I can see on mine is that the inlet bore is a lot smaller at approx. 0.37 dia. The O/D of the inlet stub is the same at 0.75.
Have I got the wrong end of this?

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Collector Inspector,
I would really appreciate information on the model number etc of the carb that was fitted to the Anzani Pilot.
Was it exactly the same one that was fitted to the Little Forty F of 1949/50?
Do you think it was fitted to any other engines?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Little Model Forty F (1949/50)

Thanks Charles for the clarification concerning gear ratios.
With all this information that you have - when is the book going to be published?
