Re: Bing needle - settings
Firstly I have to say I don't have any experience with the Bing carb but am commenting generally, am sure someone with more knowledge will be along shortly. Certainly with the villiers carb raising and lowering the needle with the screw adjustment can make quite a difference, when I converted by 40+...

Re: 40+ Crankcase gets very hot!
Glad to help. Gotta be honest and say I have never actually felt the temp of my 40's crankcase while running ( I'm too stupid and would probably just get tangled in the flywheel ) and once stopped I am usually too busy trying to remember to avoid the exhaust ( now that IS hot, don't ask me how I kno...

Re: 102 slowly coming back to life
I seriously advise against so modifying your tank. Obviously the tank was built for the Oz market and thus factory adjusted to work with gravity running in the opposite direction to here 'up over', reversing end caps will not only invalidate your warranty but may destroy this conditioning and cause ...

Re: Seagull 40 Plus Two Overhauled
Seems sensible to me as long as the product is suitable for iron heads ( just thinking some products may be geared to modern 'all alloy' engines these days and so not be quite as good for gulls perhaps? ) Just to add to this thread I have recently got hold of a product called 'Salt exterminator' its...

Re: 40+ Crankcase gets very hot!
The idea of using warmth and acetone etc was to get the stubborn screw loose so you can check the needle. You could mix up a small amount of 25:1 to try, if it hasn't been converted I would expect it to start but probably 4 stroke all over the place and get progressively harder to run as it warms up...

Not a good season!!
Been away for a couple of weeks, came back and was at the yacht club work party this weekend ( Isn't work party an oxymoron? ) when this guy says did you know your rudders gone? So I checked from the river bank ( low tide ) and the entire skeg has broken off my boat and taken all the underwater part...

Re: 40+ Crankcase gets very hot!
Yep, try Phil's trick, maybe a little warmth might help too ( I mean boiling water not welding torch!! ) You definitely need to check the needle as if it HAS been converted to 25:1 you will be running too lean using a 10:1 mix. True it will be well lubricated but once the oil has condensed out there...

Re: 40+ Crankcase gets very hot!
Could be the waterways are partially blocked so although you have a good flow the water is not getting to all areas of the block perhaps? Suggest a damn good backflushing! If you do mean the crankcase and not the barrel only other thing I can think of is that after years of standing the bearings cou...

Re: Point again
I used to have an old BSA Bantam that was a right bar steward when I first got it, sometimes started and ran OK but mostly didn't. I traced it to an ill fitting points cam that was effectively at an angle to the line of the shaft it was on, this caused the points to actually open at all kinds of tim...

Re: How to be sure oi/fuel is correct?
Why do you not want to change the needle? they are now available and not expensive. Also don't forget it is not recommended to change the mixture of older motors due to bearing differences

Re: Proud owner of a 170 but....
I could be wrong but I think you will find that if you fit one of these alternators you may also need to fit some kind of charge controller. The only control I think these units have is MANUAL and done by turning the connectors around, you can see it on the operating instructions photo previously. I...

Re: Seagull Running Problems
How long did it run OK for? and does it run at all now after cooling down? Before taking on the head gasket I would go through all the usual stuff first, points, plug ht lead ignition back plate screw and ensure the carb is scrupulously clean as is the fuel line and both filters ( tap and banjo - th...
