Re: Marston OG rebuild

Next job was to strip and examine the carb, which was missing the small brass shaft that connects the carb to the gear linkage. With this model when you put the engine into gear, it automatically opens the throttle to whatever the throttle lever is set to. Drop it into neutral and the engine drops t...

George sells coils that are new manufacture I believe, so far better that a NOS item that might be full of green mush lurking under the cover!

Re: Marston OG rebuild

Next job after sorting out the transom bracket was to restore the rusty cylinder. A good degrease using washing up liquid and hot water, followed by a flush of the waterways. To paint, prepare using a wire brush and rubbed down with emery paper. Then a coat of kurust to treat the corrosion, then a c...

Marston OG rebuild

I've had this engine for quite a while, but have finally got around to doing some work on it over the last 2 winters. So I'll show the work done bit by bit, and the issues found. First job was to do a general clean and check over, followed by taking a close look at the transom bracket. It was mostly...

Re the forum slowing down, I suspect there are several reasons for this, but the growth of facebook groups is probably the main one. That said there is a lot of rubbish quoted in FB groups, that was long eradicated here in the forum.

Re: How to clean tank ?

This is what I do. Remove the fuel tap and blank off the hole with an old fuel tap, or a bolt. Fill with paraffin and leave overnight. put a couple of handfuls of clean pea gravel in the tank. Shake it, repeat, then shake some more. Keep doing this. Remove gravel and wash out with washing up liquid ...

Seagulls sales were still strong in the 1970s, and they actually kept going with declining sales until the 1990s.

Re: SD Register

Bayonet cap is indeed fuel cap. Magneto numbers on magnetos with the "coolie hat" flywheel usually have a JM number stamped on the flywheel. This is useful as it is known that the JM numbers were issued out from Villiers in number order, so generally follow seagull production from the earl...

Re: That old chestnut. Seagull or Marston? - OP597

That looks like a decent engine. Enjoy :P You are right, the British Seagull company took over during the run of production, and at some point the branding on the tank changed to British Seagull. I think it was during 1937, but can't remember, there is a copy of the articles of incorporation or simi...
