It would be worth checking the mating surfaces of the water pump housing and top of the gearbox. They must be perfectly flat or the joint will leak as the two fixing screws are forward of the chamber which feeds the water tube to the cylinder and a leaking joint here will result in poor water flow. S...

102 gearbox pinion
I need to replace the water pump rotor on a 102 fixed drive gearbox. I've removed the screw that secures the sleeve with bushes. I have repeatedly heated the gearbox to high temperatures and poured oil down the screw hole but the sleeve won't budge. I am using the method suggested in the service she...

102 flywheel
I recently acquired a much abused and neglected 102.It is probably only suitable as source of spares as the tiller lug on the lower crankcase has been broken off and I do not have the missing piece. What puzzles me about this engine is that the flywheel is made of brass,it is 3 spoked, and identical ...

102 plus fuel tank.
I’ve just spent the last hour or so lead loading the dents in my fuel tank, most of which are where the support brackets (part 1304 in the parts list) make contact with the tank, and can’t help thinking that this method of mounting seems flawed. The support brackets are bound to be pulled into the...

102 plus long shaft
I have a 1946 102 plus long shaft. The exhaust tube has a couple of dents in it which I would like to remove. My idea is to make a mandrel which is a sliding fit in the tube and has a taper at one end.The idea is to then draw it through the tube with a long piece of threaded bar which will hopefully p...

Ignition problems.
Charles I think that the symptoms you describe may indicate a condenser/capacitor problem, particularly if the spark intensity keeps fluctuating. The following explanation is one taken from an article on two stroke motorcycle engines. “Many have the idea that the condenser stops the points from burn...
