Re: British seagull HT leads
Yes you're right. I always believed that they never fitted them, but the advert you found absolutely proves how wrong I was. Well spotted!

Re: British seagull HT leads
The gentleman who for years ran their repairs department told me that the first thing they would do to a motor returned to them for fixing was to replace the plug lead, and they didn't fit a suppressed one.

No Oyster, I haven't I'm afraid. I have spoken at length to her daughter, and to a couple of her colleagues.

Re: What went wrong?
The traditional black tanks had their decals applied and that was that. The original decals used an adhesive that was soluble in an alcohol/water mixture; when they dried they weren't vulnerable to water damage. After the decals were dry there was no later application of lacquer. Most of the decals ...

"I'm sure Charles P will know more about the Arthur Bray company in the post war period. Obviously Poole based and close to British Seagull."
Sadly I'm afraid I don't!

Re: Which of the Bargepusher props did the HSD wear?
My eyes did glaze over a bit, and I'm sure I must have missed something, but what conclusions have you reached?

Re: Which of the Bargepusher props did the HSD wear?
"As i've tried to explain before, i believe that due to seagulls production standards they would have kept things as simple as possible to allow any (if you like) retro-fitting provided the parts being swapped about are of a similar vintage and from similar motors. BS probably worked this out ...

Re: Which of the Bargepusher props did the HSD wear?
I have a fairly early AHC; it's a standard shaft motor cursed with those awful aluminium "G" clamps that only lasted a short time, and it has what looks exactly like the three bladed prop that is illustrated above. It too doesn't follow the contours of the gearbox, and the recess for the p...

Re: Bridge building & SD research
I don't know very much about the Establishment at all, except that it's there and that they did indeed test a Marston - my copy of those documents includes a photo of a gentleman standing holding the engine - he is wearing an absolutely splendid flat hat. Naturally, now the subject is raised I can't...

Re: SD/SDP data sheets
I don't have a wartime parts list at all, never mind close to hand.
I do have a wartime manual, where there's no reference to the nut..

Re: SD/SDP data sheets
I suspect, Charles, that you have a good idea when the JM numbers started, too. I reckon we decided that the original pre-war motors (OA up to ON/P) were maybe 2,000-ish in total didn't we? The original OA Marstons started with low numbers, but for the life of me I cannot remember if the JM numbers ...

The drawing in the War Department spares book shows it as the plain hexagon, but doesn't give dimensions or tell you what it's made of.

Re: SD/SDP data sheets
Hmm. From War Office Spares Identification List December 1952 (some six years after the wartime production ceased) One carburettor, listed as "Amal Type 46A/3A Mixing chambers are either brass, for use with single groove needle, or diecast, for use with two groove needle. This supersedes the br...

If you're referring to my best mate, he is due for what I call a jet wash and strim tomorrow As he is getting a bit rancid. This means I can't go play shooting with the boys, I'm hoping they'll wait for me .

Re: SD/SDP data sheets
Agreed, Charles. My point was that the motor we're talking about has been out of its box as you say, which means that it isn't strictly "as it left the factory". Keith if your comments refer to my observation that the carburettor collar doubled as a depth adjusting collar I have merely tak...
