Re: SD restoration

Can anybody advise the thread size on the end of my SD crank? I would like to clean up the thread by running a die along it.

Thanks.

Re: Seagull Century Stalls when in gear

Does sound like fuel starvation, I'd also clean out the float bowl, fuel line and fuel tank.

Re: Marston Thingy.

That's rather well done. Have you engraved it by hand?

On a similar subject has anybody got any decent photos of a Marston twin? I'm quite interested in seeing more details of this rare engine. How many are currently known about? I know there is one in the UK under restoration, but that is all.

Re: SD restoration

I'l do a sample as you suggested. The black tank will sit next to the fire hardening up for a while now, before T-cutting. Any suggestions as to a clear lacquer to use? Incidently I struggled to find any Simoniz tough black, so the only choice of the 2 suggested paints was hammerite. It went on well...

Re: SD on ebay

Excellent, Well i am feeling inadequate now  I did not bid as it was too far away. You are at least as far away again! Best of luck, watch out for couriers, that engine has the original steel tank by the looks of it. Very rare, so I would get the seller to either remove the tank or wrap it in ...

Re: SD restoration

I've now got 2 tanks with some paint on The first coat of primer allways shows any areas needing more sanding or a further scrape of filler. By filling the dent with solder, the need for filler is kept to a minimum. The black finish is hammerite satin finish, which I will leave to harden off for a w...

Re: SD restoration

I might give that a try Phil, I saw a similar idea on a car restoration programme a while back, small tabs soldered in place then the dent was pulled out using a porta-pack. I have a third tank to repair, which has the largest dents, so this method could be good for that tank. I got the first coat o...

Re: SD restoration

Just had my first try at lead loading. Got the hang of it fairly quickly, clean brass, plenty of flux and a bit of care seems the way ahead. Remembering to put the dent in the vertical plane so the solder pools is a good idea  After several small skims of filler and rub downs, this tank will h...

Re: SD on ebay

I can tell you exactly what it costs, a lot more than £50 :(

It's worth it to make the engine like new though :D

Re: Featherweight from the Bay

Top job sir.

Can the lead lining be achieved with a blowtorch only, or is a bigger propane burner required, to spead the heat a little more? I have two 102 tanks to look at, both with fairly moderate dents. I fancy having a go, rather than just filling them.
