Another box of bits

You don't see many individual parts for Seagulls on ebay in Australia these days, so was surpised when a collection of parts was offered. The bits weren't that close to me, probably 3 hours drive, but still within striking distance. The parts are a mix of old and new, but mostly old. I won't be able...

Tiller mount mystery

Most products manufactured over a period of time are subject to changes in design and materials. Changes to design or materials are not undertaken without good reason as there is a cost to implement each change so the change will be as a result to either reduce production costs, improve the product,...

Re: beautiful sunny sunday

" I read somewhere that most wounds were caused by splinters and much care was used in avoiding the possibility of producing splinters. Could have read that in "Life in Nelson Navy", a very interesting book of which presently I can't tell Author nor Editor because I borrowed it from m...

Re: Size matters

There are a few references to 5" stub tillers in previous posts. Here is one:

Tillers
The early F and the FVs were initially fitted with 5" stub tillers. I suspect - only suspect - that these were probably not painted.

Re: Box of Bits

I very much doubt that you have lost anything. The gearbox is a 12/48 clutched model, I assume from a Century Plus model. I thought that the 10/35 box was for the direct drive models only, but I could be wrong. Anyway, here are some pictures of the box (after a cleanup) so you should be able to tell...

Re: Box of Bits

Not previously pictured, was a leg and gearbox from a Century model that came with the box of bits. When I split the gearbox, I was surprised to see a stainless drive shaft. On inspection, this turned out to be a neat repair of an old shaft. It looks like the stainless was machined to a square at en...

Box of Bits

I've been mucking around with a Silver Cenury that I have had for years. The gearbox was shot, the barrel was rusted, and it did't have a transom bracket so it was mainly just for parts. I repaired an old cylinder barrel so decided to resurrect the Silver Century. I found an ad on Gumtree for the mi...

Re: Museum collection

That one is a Gold Cheeta made by Boundy Manufacturing in Springvale Victoria.

Below is a better example of this brand alongside one of the restored Seagulls.

Museum collection

I came across this collection of Seagulls in the Maritime Museum in Townsville. One of the staff told me that they were all in going condition but I think he was a bit optimistic. There were a couple of forty series (not pictured) that might run, but the rest wee definitely in " as found" ...

Re: FREE!!!! Come get it....

I did work on 5.75 hours/gallon. Same result as you, just a different method. Distance 11,000 km = 6,000 nautical miles at 4 knots (4 nautical miles/hrs) then total time required is 1500 hours. at 5.75 hrs/gallon, fuel required is 1500/5.75 = 260 gallons At 22.6 nautical miles/gallon, fuel required ...

I meant gallons/hr. This was the figure quoted by BS. I based the fuel calculation on this.

Re: FREE!!!! Come get it....

Lets run the numbers. 11,000km is 6,000 nautical miles. Assuming that the boat can average 4 knots for the journey, it should only take around 62 days non stop to complete. The factory estimate of fuel consumption for a 40 plus is 5.75 gallons/hour so 260 gallons of 10:1 should do it. Thats a little...

Re: ht connector spring bits

The inch screw in the HT lead that I dissembled was made of steel, not bronze, (I tested it with a magnet), so maybe BS changed the spec at some time. I Noticed a couple of other changes between the 1950 and 70ish leads. The groove in the back of the Magneto HT connector went from one groove to two ...

Re: Bought Another One

Thanks Hugz. From the parts list, the bolts are part number 217. (I should have looked this up earlier) This is the same part number for the bolt that holds the heads. From the R marking on the head of this bolt, these must be high tensile steel. (Not sure why Seagull would specify high tensile for ...
