Another evinrude!

Hello all

Today I went down to Bunbury to pick up a nice Evinrude 2hp sportsman as my next project.
A big thanks to SOS member AusAnzani (Spiro) for informing me of the listing. It has had one owner since new, and allegedly runs...
Cylinder barrel has been welded up for some reason, but it still turns and has decent compression. Also, the original decal is visible on the tank. I will post better pics when I get home.

Hi all

Yes she runs! After a new spark plug and some 12-1 in the tank, she started third pull. It pumps water like it was new, and idles down nicely.
This one will remain unrestored, but work will be done on the massive dent in the fuel tank.
Here is a pic of it running, and more pics will be added when I can next get to the workshop.

Awesome 8)

All things considered, would it be fair to say it's one of your best buys so far?

Well,

I think it ties in 1st place as best buy with a pair of 1970's Merc 45s. One is in really good condition, nothing wrong with it. The other needs some work, but for $50 including factory service manual, it was pretty good! 8)

See pic of the nice Merc below.

The little Merc's seem to be quite sought after, good little bargain.
I have only got a 500.

Nice Evinrude. I am interested in how the tank dent comes out, as I have a similar tank with several dents. Its a job I have been thinking about for a while.

Hello all

Now I'm at the stage where I am going to attempt to get the massive dents in the tank out, and have a couple of options before me -
1. Cut out a section of the tank opposite the dent and knock it out from the inside
2. Try popping the dent out with compressed air in the tank
Taking bottom of tank off and smoothing out dents then reattach bottom of tank
3. Send to a specialist who can push the dent out with a tool so no cutting etc required on tank
4. Leave the way it is to preserve what's left of the original decal.

What are some moethods used by members for taking out dents?

Hi Boyd,

You probably need to decide how close to original or undamaged condition you want the tank to be before considering the variety of options available to remove dents. Once that decision has been made, the rest will follow.

Give me a call if you want to discuss further.
