Good point Hugz... I've added those exceptions too now!

...can you think of any others? They also used an "R" to denote roller bearings, but I'm not quite sure which models that applies to...??? I'll ask John too.

The Serial # identifier does not work for my EFNR unless mine is a bizarre early prototype made in 1973 :) rather than 83 as I believe it to be. It is confusing though because the DD3 part of the serial number is not supposed to be for 83, from other things I've read it should be just D3.

As far as I can tell it's fine on my 40 plus's.

The engine number on your motor seems wrong.

DD3 would indicate either 1973 or just possibly 1993. As they did not make the CD ignition in 1973 it cannot be then, it could well be 1993, though records are scant and I suspect for 1993 the number would have been TEFNR as by then they were fitting twist grips. Has yours a twistgrip throttle?

What colour is it, later ones had gold props and tops to the recoils, as far as I know only a handfull were ever made.

Sadly without the full records from Seagull, (they have been lost we fear..), my Identifier was never going to be perfect! Gives you a good indication though!

My motor has a blue tank and recoil cap which I thought was consistent with 1983 and definitely no twist grip.

How many numbers should there be after the EFNR?

number could be anything from 1 to 2000 odd as it was the number made in that month, I am guessing by 1983 the numbers were down to approx 200 to 400 a month.

We find alot of anomalies that cannot be explained and i guess this one will remain one of them.

If at any stage you have to remove the flywheel, and it has not got the 1983 white Mk III ignition, but the later MkIV, the mystery will deepen. One thought is 1983 was the first year they only put a single letter before the number, and force of habit could have created a second letter, once there, difficult to erase!

I've always assumed being blue meant 83, because they only used blue for a short time?. It definitely has DD3 and not 0D3. As you say it could a slip of the punch, the first part of the serial # is just 123 so that would tie in with the sort of production numbers you suggest at that time.

I don't suppose an error like that makes a Seagull highly valuable like stamps are with a mistake that get into circulation? :)

Like the idea of miss stamped ones being valuable, can you imagine how much money the pirates would be making! I can see them rushing out to buy sets of number punches now!

I think you are right, blue was used about then, in 1984 the plastic tanks came in to replace the cheap steel ones, sadly they proved to be not a lot better!

Is that the lake high up in Utah, grand scenery!

My blue tank is steel, but plastic coated, it's not really been tested being in fresh water and UT's dry climate so it's held up fine so far. Yes that's on one of our high altitude lakes, there are more pics on the "I was unfaithful to my Seagulls today" thread if you're interested. Have a good break and I hope you find some sunshine, all I have to do is look out my window :) we seem to have it all summer and a good part of the rest of the year.

I saw this on another web page, this is another 1983 motor using two letters JJ3 in the date code not just J. Scroll down to the EFPW motor, also with blue tank etc. it seems Seagull were confused around this time.
