Could it be, for bolting to transom?

We can't say it's nickel just because I think it is, someone will have to take one to their local chrome platers & ask them to check it out.

All we can say for sure is that FV & FVP transom brackets look like they were plated, nickel would be logical as Seagull were using chrome platers at that time, & nickel is one step in the chrome plating process, but it could also be tin, though not many chrome companies do tin.

Let's be sure before we claim it as a fact.

Bolting to the transom would be my guess, but it's not a very elegant looking slot.

I have one later forty bracket (on an SJM) that has these slots, others haven't. The only 'Bolt on' forty bracket that I have has holes rather than slots, which makes more sense.

I have been cleaning and putting parts back together on the FVP and had noticed the spiral brazed fin under the bronze impeller, I gather its to improve the water circulation.




It looks like a innovative solution to low water circulation and probably wouldn't have been needed if the impeller hadn't been fitted upside down.

Is the spiral brazed fin a later addition by a previous owner or did it leave the factory like that? Also just for future reference is the impeller in the picture you posted upside down?

The spiral fin is an add on, I suspect by the previous owner.
the impeller has extra meat at the top, that should be at the bottom.

I dont understand why the rotor looks as if it is upside down.

I am relatively new to Seagulls, but I would have thought that the 'extra meat' or flange would be at the top. Because, as the water flows upwards, the flange at the bottom would give some unwanted restriction to the flow. Additionally if the flange was at the top it would restrict the flow from going up the drive shaft tube. I obviously haven't taken into account some aspect that you are aware of.
It is always risky examining old assemblies of unknown history, but two of my FVs have the flange at the top. One rotor is bronze/brass, the other is aluminium.

If the thing was the other way round it would rotate in the wrong direction.

So does that mean that the impeller is free to float, when running?

Check again which way up that impeller is supposed to be fitted, on my understanding the disc bit should be uppermost.
