Original tiller grips

Post by Oyster 49 »

I see there are some "Dover" grips for sale here. There have been a few of these cropping up on ebay of late, last pair were start bids at £40!

Not sure about pre SD engines as I have no experience of those, but they were certainly fitted to SD onwards through the 1950s and 60s. A slightly different version in the 70s I think. They are cardboard backed, so once fitted they are very hard to remove. Exonite is the brand name of the plastic they were made from.

There are similar ones around from time to time, and a firm called vintage grips make new ones.

I have one or two, but fitted on, for my purposes, the wrong brass tiller. I have not worked out how to remove them without damage, so that they can be fitted onto another tiller. Hot water soak doesn't seem to work.
