Perhaps as Jan suggested, that is where the name Little 40 came from & all the rest of the small capacity followed on to be 40 - & plus.

Charles, I think we solved a mystery.

I was always wondering why they named the 64cc models Little 40 and 40 Minus.
After I measured the bore and stroke of F341 I understand the 40 models started as 40cc outboards.

Because of the corrosion I bead blasted the aluminium parts.

I used some wire wool and polish to remove the dull bead blasting finish.

It will take some time in a moisty shed to get back the nice aluminium patina.
Assembling the crankcase and crankshaft.

The easiest parts are done.

I used some Loctite Liquid Metal to fix the corrosion holes of the lower crankcase.

The parts of the choke assembly.

The carb body and float chamber is a one piece casting with Amal number 52/001.
There is a 8,5mm restriction placed in the bore of the carburettor, the same size of the inlet diameter of the cylinder stub.

A F341 update.

The flywheel was wobbling so I replaced it by a period correct flywheel from the shed.

The coil was dead so I also replaced it by an old coil in working condition.

The late style Villiers throttle lever is replaced by a slim long SD style Amal lever, is this correct for the early Little Forty with Amal carb?

I ordered BSF dices and made new cylinder studs from an old 102 clutch rod.

The biggest problem will be reparing the badly corroded head.

I started making an aluminium adapter plate to fill the corroded area of the head.

Not seen one with an old style amal lever on before, pin for tiller is fitted vertical.
what about the tank mounts?

You used a a clutch rod to make some new studs? Were on this model used 1/4" studs? My FVP has 5/16" and I was also tempted to replace them but I didn't touch them in the end as it then would be quite possible, that damages on the crankcase would occur.

There are some period ads provided by Skyetoyman on the main SOS site, these show the early little forty with a SD style brass amal throttle lever, so carry on! Looking good Jan I have a FV cylinder head if it is any help.

Pin for tiller is fitted horizontal on my F model.

I will weld the tank mountings back on the head, I did it before on my FVP.

Studs are 1/4. Crankcases, cylinder, piston and head are different on a F model.

Thanks for the offer but a FVP head will not fit on a 40cc F model.

just picking up on a slightly earlier post on this thread re casting, i have a lot of scrap aluminium in my garden, all from seagulls (mostly gearbox casings)
is anyone likely to be doing any casting in the near future?
if so, give me what its worth scrap value and its yours.

Today I welded, machined and finished the cylinder head.
Everything fits together perfectly.

Now I have to make the base and head gasket.

I think the base gasket of the F model was made of paper but I don't know the material used for the head gasket.
The gearbox is beyond repair.

Does anybody knows a good Little 40 model FV gearbox for sale?

I'm also looking for the original metal impeller.

The pump rotor you need is the one made of aluminum? I should have one spare somewhere.

I have an FV gearbox with the skeg missing, I'll check.

The pump rotor you need is the one made of Bronze.

The drive tube is smaller on the FV/FVP, maybe smaller than standard on the F as well.

Hi Jan, sorry that FV gearbox with the broken skeg has gone. Can't remember who had that particular part. I do have a complete FVP gearbox though, complete with waterpump housing and rusty leg.
