original parts on sjp

hello all.
i'm trying to put together a recently acquired 40 plus.
serial number SJP29215.
several questions then as originality is my "big thing" at the moment.
what tiller should i use, brass or aluminium. (what length should the tiller be?)
what thumb throttle should i use?
which tiller grip would have been fitted in the early sixties?
the gearbox fitted on this motor has the 2 slots on the water inlet, but i've also got a 3 holed replacement if that's more original.
plastic or aluminium impeller? (possibly even bronze?)
villiers carb, should the choke be hinged on the left or right? metal or plastic float bowl? metal or plastic inlet compensater?
drive tube, was it chromed or zinc plated?
on the transom mount, was the tilt pin brass or stainless (i've got both)

fuel tank as far as i can make out would have had flat ends instead of the imbossed type with seagull. right or wrong?
fuel cap plastic or aluminium?

Some pics of SJP 21350 I took from the local waste disposal site a few years ago.

It was still in the original shipping crate and I think it was never used and/or they never changed parts.

Unfortunately the crate was badly damage by woodworms.

Your SJP is 1 or 2 years younger but I think you can use this pictures as a guide.

WOW what a find! and still in its packing case as well.

ok from what i can see on your photos JAN, it would suggest that my SJP has at some point had the block changed for a later cylinder and cylinder head. mine is attached with bolts instead of screws (even though they are the same thread) and it does not have the "bridged" exhaust port.
looking at an SJM that i have (SJM210 from 1955/6) this engine has the earlier cylinder with the "bridged" exhaust port, cylinder head attached with screws not bolts, long thumb throttle, aluminium fuel cap and flush ends on the tank, carb choke mechanism hinged on the left, metal float bowl and compensater.

does anybody know at what time period BS made changes to the cylinders and heads on the 40's. this may give me some direction in which to head as to what is right or wrong. i think i'm nearly there with parts but would like to know a bit more about the cylinder changes and what years this was brought about?

as always any info on this is gratefully received gents.

regards jon

another thing that's slightly bugging me is the gearbox.
am i right in thinking that from about 1957 the gearboxes were changed from "holes" to slots on the water inlet?

slightly confused

About SJMs have a look at my previous post.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4172&hilit=3114

It's an SJM 3114. The gearbox has holes to suck water. The engine seems original, I don't know about the tiller. I though that the brass fitted on mine was correct but now I see Jan's forty plus with the aluminum. Maybe because it's a different model.

thanks stelios.
yes my SJM is basically the same but with 3 blade prop and "in the world" magneto cover. the mag cover might be wrong but i like it.

so, with the slightly later SJP there should be very little difference in the powerhead until we get to the "changeover" year when BS changed the gearboxes from holes to slots. is that right? any idea what year this was?

i do think though that around 1960 or so, BS introduced some changes to the cylinder. from what i've seen so far from JAN and STELIOS, both of their motors seem to be pre 1960.
so from that i can deduce that both SJM's and SJP's built before 1960 would have "bridged" exhaust port, screw attached cylinder head and up to around 1957 or so , the holed gearbox.
does this seem right so far?
hopefully CHARLES 1 and 2 could confirm.

might be getting somewhere now.
cheers gents
