Saving Old Seagulls

Many of the readers of these pages have one Seagull & only come to S-O-S to learn which gear oil to use & what's the points & plug gap, & only know about the one they own, perhaps it's time to inform them, about the whole of Seagulls product range & why 1 is never enough.

So tell us your favourite, why, what you use it for & on what.

I will show you mine, if you show me yours, you started it.

My favourite is a CDi featherweight.

This is the one that I use the most, and it is totally reliable. But if the house was burning down I would grab this one H A

I was hoping the classics would get a boost from a few replies.

My response would probably be for something exotic like a Curlew or a 5R but that might slow down other people's answers by talking about Seagulls they're unlikely to see.

My favourite Seagull, will always be the first one I bought.
Why, its much lighter than a 102 and runs just as fast, if not faster.

For me a copper top SD, with brass carb and trumpet, like my avatar, closely followed by the little forty range. However my real interest nowadays is pre war, but I only have one prewar seagulls, my others are Britannias. Sorry no pics as I'm overseas working.

In terms of interest, the Marston twin I suppose, as it is the one never seen, no pictures anonymous or otherwise.

My 102 is the nicest gull I own
But my silver century is the roughest looking fastest and most used

I blame CharlesUK for getting into gulls! He talked me into it!!! (thanks heaps )

The boat I was gluing up is in the back ground.
To the left is my furnace I use for casting prop's , engine heads and other parts!

I have several... but all are different and all used in different ways. My favourite, now that it is back to close to original, is the SD purchased from john last year and used at Chosley before it was returned to "factory" standard. ( I don't like the word refurbish; may be some one can help me out.. I strive to get engines back to original spec or close to but with out extensive repaint, chrome or polish)

The engine is a cracker, lots of power with solidly over engineered scantlings before plastic thrust blocks.. robust simplicity

The photo shows her before upgrade, she now has an original fuel tank fixed as original with the simple jubilee clip, bayonet cap and throttle leaver, fuel line giving correct carb orientation, tiller wing nut, to name a few... She also has a new drive shaft after the old one failed on the river resulting in a long row!! Great stuff!!

Favourite for my type of boat and type of use is a Curlew.
Type of use is the River Ouse which has a 6 knot speed limit, with backwaters to snoop around - type of boat is a 10ft traditionally shaped fibreglass dinghy.
Curlews are light, clean, always easy to start, quiet, and just generally 'friendly' to use. Mine don't need to run at much above tick over to get the boat to river speed (enough power to be a bit naughty at times too!)
Rated at 4 HP - don't know if that's true, but they are certainly peppy for their size.

Neutral/forward drive is a nice feature to have - wouldn't really have a need for reverse.
Not easy to find a Curlew- don't think Seagull made very many.

my favourite gull is the early 102 they look great i like the cylindrical shaped head and the fuel tank" beautiful", unfortunately i do not own one as such, but next year hopefully i will come across one.
i own two silver centuries and a clutch less century 100 think thats the model. i like this one as it was bought with very low usage and is very clean.

Only ever had 2 a 40- and a 55
the 55 did me proud in the Summer
when it got me this

its also got a built in fish finder!
right out in the middle of a big highland loch it suddenly stopped, my pal cast his fly and for the next hour we had fish after fish in a place where Trout wouldn't usually be found, when the action ended the 55 started first pull.

Mine would be a 1976 Featherweight that has had very little use. It is just so neat and tiny.

It was also my very first square block.

It makes way with little or no fuss. At little or no actual speed.

It is also light as a feather...
