Complete Propeller range pictorial database

Post by Charles uk »

For many years now in the background of this site we have been discussing compiling a pictorial database of all Seagull props right throughout the entire range, to this end are there any members of this site that are CAD Draftsman or have a son who is one, who could design a background (printoutable anywhere in the world, to an exact size) that the best examples of props could be photographed against to provide a complete list of all Seagull props & which models there were designed for & can be used on.

To the same end it would be great to find someone with the time & the photo editing ability who would be interested in compiling all these efforts.

If its just a practical database, a standard protractor picture of four printable pages in a PDF form that can be printed out with a prop placed on top in the centre and photographed.
Just with a basic set up like that will give variations, with printers and cameras.
Any more technical than that and it is not going to work, or it will just be for the race prop fraternity.
I can provide the four part PDF if needed.

I don't think it needs to be that big Keith, I've just drawn out with a pencil & compass what was in my mental picture, using CAD, the 1/2 & 1" diameter lines could be darker.

Glued to a bit of ply with a 12mm dowel in the centre would make a perfect prop pic background & if we could all print out the same background & they all printed the same accurate size we could start taking prop pics.

Can we add enough diameter lines to measure all the required diameters 6 to 13 inches in 1/4 inch increments & the hub, Chris?

The hard part is getting them to print so the diameter circles are exact on all the various printers we use.

one critical piece of info is the pitch. This could be measured and tabulated separately. I note that on some of the older props the pitch was actually hand stamped on the prop.

The point of the database was to identify all of Seagull's prop & list the motors that they were used on & could be used on, the diameter & picture were just to ensure we were al talking about the same prop, I'm not sure knowing the pitch would really help anyone except perhaps a couple of racers, the only props that had the pitch marked on them, were all the Marston ones, the blue 5 & 5R & the Seagull Sport range.

Why do you feel the pitch is critical AJ?

There are only 2 or 3 of us racers who feel the need & have the equipment & knowledge to measure & modify Seagull props, if you don't have a rev counter & GPS on your dashboard, worrying about the prop pitch is several steps further down the development road.

So something more like this?
Image

The red circle in the center is 1/2" then 6" with 1/4" increments up to 13"
I can make the 1/2 and 1" darker if you want.

Pitch is relatively simple to measure and completes the picture of the prop.. Also with the revs and gear ratio it provides the answer to speed and efficiency.. Whether the engine is overloaded or will be overloaded on a displacement boat etc. not necessary.... but then how much of what we do is necessary?

I think the gear ratio would be a good thing
I can flick you an email with the pics if you want.

Nice work Chris, now all we need to do is find a computer wiz kid who's good a databases & photo editing & wants to study Seagulls prop history.

Studying Seagulls prop history would be fun, but the data base but is outside my field of expertise ...... Photo editing.. Maybe! depending on what you wanted to do to the photos.

What props have you got Bruce? I can Email you a PDF to print off as the background
