These are all I have - one pretty good, the other slightly worn. The brass arm is straight but damaged at the flange bracket ( metal lug type ) The ally arm has a kink. The red is paint.
edit - are these normally open ended ? I see some that seem to have an endcap ?

I have not seen them with end caps, But then a lot of people use tiller extensions.

Rob,
Just so that we can try to firm up the dates for this style of DOVER grip, what are the dates of your two examples.
I have seen this style of grip on engines in 1949/1950/ 1951, but i suspect that they were in use before that and possibly a bit after.

To the very best of my knowledge (questionable at times i must admit) and according to my data, there only ever was 1 "Dover" grip and that clearly had DOVER stamped into it. The "later squiggly line" grip came after this. So as a rough dating Dover grips from whenever (possibly late Marston era) to mid 50's which would tie in nicely with F,FV/P production, then "squiggly line" type, then a rubber grip also with "squiggly lines" although much more prominent, then the "ribbed" soft touch rubber grip.
Most of the grips i've looked at ALL seem to be open ended with no end cover to them to allow for the tiller extension to be used.

The 2 NOS ones I have both have end caps.

Just unearthed AD135 with...... Dover grip with end cap. also supporting a transom bracket with bent bronze thumb screws.
This has to be a very early AD from 1946.
I will post photos for Jon's records over the weekend

I think that we must try to sort out all this and make some suggestions.
Taking it in date order:-
1. The DOVER type in Adrian's photo which has 6 full length grooves.
According to Adrian was fitted to SDs. (Is that 1942 to 1946?). I would expect that there is other evidence concerning these dates.
I do not think there is significant evidence that these were fitted to FV/FVPs.
2.The DOVER type in Rob's photo (and mine, Keith's and Adrian's), which has 3 long grooves and 6 short deep central grooves.
Examples of ADs, (early) Fs, and FV/FVPs are fitted with these, within the approx period 1947 to 1953 and perhaps up to 1955. ( Evidence:- AD860 - 1947/8. AD4808 - 1948/9, F1207 - 1949, and others)
(Jon, there is more than 1, indeed, at least 3 types of DOVER grip)
3. From very very approx 1955, the smoother grip (without DOVER ident) and with 6 long grooves was fitted.
I need to collect data on the later LSs to verify this and hopefully Boyd will collect data on the SJM/SJP, which started being produced in 1955.
