By all means get one when available.

Be prepared for few things......

Ignition and magneto: Unique so beware

Reed valve: You may have to make a new one as generally stuffed.

Big end needles: Totally one off dimensions. Biggest issue aye.

Else if you find a runner a good start.

They have no corrosion issues as castings are............THICK!

Hey Jon, Seeing its is Sunday over there, can you look up your records to see what a clutched 102 was worth in '64 or thereabouts? Would like to check price difference between Australia and UK. I mentioned before, you must have missed the post.

I'll keep my eye out Bruce. Seem to be more collectors around now and they don't hit the market. Good info, thanks.

Have looked through my old magazines.

In 1963 a direct drive 102 was £43, ans a clutched version was £48.

How does that compare to Aus?

Excellent HA. Are the magazines called Yachting World or similar?

Aussie clutched 102 in '64 was close to 130 Pounds au or $260au

The exchange rate was $1au = .569UK pounds. (we don't have the pound symbol on our key boards which is a pest) So the Australian motor cost 148UK pounds. The same motor in the UK cost 48 pounds.Huge difference!!

Average wage in AU was 57 pounds/week
Average wage in UK was 16 pounds/week

So the clutched 102 cost 2.6 weeks work downunder and exactly 3 weeks in the UK.
Interesting. There is a huge profit for BS to sell motors downunder with the motors selling 3.08 times more or 100 uk pounds more. Surely they could transport for 10 pounds each leaving 90 pounds profit less retailers markup.

Now we know why there were a lot of early seagulls downunder. Will be interesting to see the seagull exchange rate over the next decade or so.

Interestingly the first price I have for a clutched 102 au was in 1949 for 86 au pounds. In fifteen years it went from 89 to 148 or about a 60% increase. Aprox 4% CPI.

That was a good bit of research hey! Take note Jon.

Another bit of grueling research which revealed little. It seems the focus has changed to planing hulls now. No Gull adverts, articles or pictures 1965 - 1966. Only one advert for a little motor was a Clinton. But here is some articles I found interesting.

2 stroke oil and bottle becomes a fender. Clever.

This article gives a bit of an insight into the change of direction.

And this seems a typical scenario now.

They are somewhat rare lately. I have two of them.....somewhere........shall dig out and perhaps a pic or two.

Funny how one gravitates to either Au or Unique AU..........

Blame the Cat!

Skipper was an imported power head. Lauson ....Lawson?

The bottom end was AU local foundry as per available for similar air cooled OBs of the time.
