Just joined the site to try and gather some information. My Grandfather gave me this motor years ago and it has been sitting in my garage for the past 20 years. I think it is time for it to move on to a new home but don't really know anything about it or how best to find it a new home where it will be appreciated.
From looking on this site, I believe it is an early model 40. The identifier app says that it is from 1966 but after looking at the list of serials provided on the I.D. Letters page, I think it is a 1956 motor.
I have not tried to start it yet, but it looks to be in great condition.
Would appreciate any advice, including any thoughts about the value of the engine.
That has to be the most honest looking, un-molsted, original looking motor i've seen in a long while. Looks as though it's hardly been used!

Save for the odd mark here and there that's a real beauty.
H-A's right of course. See if you can get it running before you sell it. (plenty of help from us) You never know, the bug might bite and you'll be looking for another one to keep it company
Hi M, great find in really good condition for its age I have one the same year and am in the process of restoring hopefully to the condition of what you have found in your shed. I paid $150 AUS for mine but looks very neglected. You can see in the pic, the chrome is shot, cable up the creek and fuel tank is knocked about unlike yours. Just thought I would give you a comparison image. Hope this helps. Oh, also when you start working on Seagulls with help from the forum it becomes so interesting. But when you get them on a boat it becomes (well words escape me).

It would be nice to be able to find on in such condition occasionally. Unfortunately in Australia, those occurrences seem to be few and far between ..... at least for me anyway

From the research I have conducted, I'd say that it would be a 1966.
The serial coding with letters in the serial number came in to effect around 1960/61, before that there was just a numbered serial code (if that makes sense).
For example, I have SJP 22051 which is a 1959 motor, and SJP 654 H5 which is a August 1965 motor - the 'n' is slightly confusing in the fact that (again from my research) seagull used the letters "A to L" for every month in the year; A being January, B is February etc.
Do you mind if I enter your motor onto my data collection for SJP's document? I have just about all the data needed from the pics you've posted, so if it's ok with you I'll log the data as soon as I get back from holiday.
