Also an SD and V.
Sorry about the rubbish pictures, as they are the only motors I can get to in the stores.

Why has the SD have a timing mark, but not the rest.

Chas
I think the question was directed at the 102 with SD stamped into the top crank case half. Look closely and you'll see 2 timing marks made with a centre punch.

The other motor in the second picture looks like an actual SD from ww2, but this time the crankcase is stamped with a V.

Over the last few years i must have seen around half of the alphabet stamped into these crankcases.
This chap with the initials SD seems to crop up quite a lot. There are others of course, but it's fairly common for a 102 to see an initial in the top crankcase half.
When i get 5 mins i'll show you some more if you're interested.

Would that motor need a timing mark, as it's not a coolie hat baseplate is it?

Did you ever see an SD stamped crankcase on an SD, that didn't have a long water jacket cylinder?

But there are a lot without any letters, who built those?

Jon I have a vague memory of the SD being cast onto the crankcase i.e. sticking out, rather than stamped into, on some examples am I dreaming?

I think you must be dreaming Chas.

Unless i'm mistaken, just about every seagull, new and old that i've seen, have a serial number (and any initials) stamped rather than cast into the crankcase.

Cylinders however have a lot of numbers and letters cast into/onto them, but not crankcases.

Bear with me and i'll get some more pics of cases with initials.
Back in a bit...

Also the earlier SD's did not have "seagull" cast on the upper casing but were plain unlike yours Tam

Bingo! Had ago at starting the AD 102 for the first time today, heaps of fuel and it started 1st pull of the rope first run since the early 80s  I couldn't believe it nearly had to run away and pee with excitement  . Runs great and pumps heaps of water. Thanks for the advice on going though and checking the whole motor and gearbox carefully before trying to run the motor. Carby leaks a bit but that's an easy fix. Now for the boat run. 8)

Keith, the model I have without the casting "seagull" is SD 1888 L3, the cases are also a slightly different shape, I would say virtually identical to the ON/OP's which raises another question as I have several other earlier SD's with the "seagull" casting.... So, was there a spare stock of ON/OP casings they found tucked away shortly after the SD was in production???

Seagull lettering 125.JPG
SD125.P3.

You might also notice the crankcase fasteners are brass. My later SD's as well. My D's are ferrous.
