Seagull 102 S.N # 102 TC80928L

Post by Eugrasse »

Dear all, I would like to introduce myself to this forum, my name is Eugenio, I'm Italian of Padova, town close to Venice where I like sailing. Recently I 've purchased a Seagull 102 long shaft which I've now restored. My aim is to use it on a Lightning wooden sail boat of 1966. This morning I' ve started the Seagull and I've noticed an oil leak where the propeller shaft exits from the gearbox. There is no seal or oring to replace in this point so I wonder what I made wrong.
There is somebody there who can suggest me on how to work it out.?
Best regards
Eugenio

Hi Eugenio and welcome to the forum.

There is nothing wrong with your 102 gearbox. They all seem to leak a little bit from the shaft, it's perfectly normal. There are no oil seals in this part of the gearbox.
Virtually all of my 102's leak as well.
Be mindful to keep topping up the oil level in the gearbox once in a while and things should be fine.

Do you have any pictures for us to look at of your restored motor. We like pictures :P

What grade of oil are you using in this gearbox?
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Ciao Eugenio,

Charles uk's question is very important.
You must use SAE 140 oil in the gearbox.

By the way, will you go to next year's Velalonga? Unfortunately I missed the last one.
Happy sailing (and motoring) with the Lightning,

Sandro

Dear Sandro, I will consider the idea to go to Velalonga 2017, my Lightning was under restore in the last one. I've finished to paint it in August.
I've used the Seagull 102 on the Lightning because it's of the same period, but I've a serious problem without the reverse, I'm not able to head the boat in the narrow marina where I land. Any suggestion will be welcome.

Dears, this is what I purchased in June, I haven't got pics of unit now in working order. I've replaced the carburetor with the original Amal 400, replaced gear oil, spark plug, reassembled it and just started and run it last Sunday. I've got the following problems:
I didn't find the correct fuel pipe connection at the carb, because i've replaced the not original one and i got the new without the connector. than i've put a no original brasse connector which is too low under the carburetor, when I turn the engine, it does not turn completely because it hits the transom bracket .
The engine when running slides down until the collar touches the crankcase, therefore the engine doesn't turn because the previous problem. I need to fix the correct higher position and fix the collar more steady it should not slip up.
when i tilt the engine because I'm sailing , the propeller touches the water, breaking the boat.
Because the lack of reverse, it's impossible for me to head the 18 feet boat in a close marina, I need to paddle to go backward. This is very annoying.
