Have I got the longest one?

Post by Ozzmotorz »

I have recently acquired this SD model seagull.
It was purchased from the son, of the original owner, and came with various original papers and exploded diagrams, that most have probably seen before.
Interestingly, it looks to of had a 3 inch extension, to the driveshaft, and exhaust tube.
I have never seen one made longer before, but have seen plenty of shortened versions.
I’m not sure if I should leave it as is, or change it back to factory length.
Can anybody confirm if the transom bracket is correct.?
I always thought they had the right angle bent brass thumb screws.
Cheers

As the original transom would be unusable, pretty much none of them have the original transom any more.

Long shaft made longer. I assume somebody has done that to fit to a particular boat. Personally I would trim it back down to standard long shaft. My SD is standard, rather than long shaft.

The original military installation for FBE rafts was a heavy side mount made of angle iron. Very few of those about. What you have on your engine is fairly common fitment for 102s from around the late 40s.

Measure the length of the drive tube.

Long shaft (or more correctly how many of them seem to be originally before they got cut down or extended) should be in the ballpark of 23 1/2".

If for any reason this has been extended it could be longer than this measurement.

Standard shaft should be in the ballpark of 17 1/2" suffice to say a difference of around 6 inches between the 2 shaft lengths.

Bracket looks good to me as this is the sort of thing that many SD's will have nowadays. The correct wartime brackets are super rare these days.
You could always find a pair of clamps that have the bent thumb screws and fit those to your bracket, but how you've got it now it will be perfectly fine.

Interesting if this has been extended!

It looks to be more of a repair, as the exhaust looks unmodified, unless its an extended drive tube to suit the exhaust, are SD's not all long shafts.

Have a look at the first pics Keith, doesn't that show signs of repair?

Jon where did you get those drive shaft tube lengths?
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Thanks for all the replies.
The exhaust tube, has been extended. It is a brasstube, and has had a chrome tube braised onto the end. A very good job, as at a quick glance, it’s almost perfect.
I think I will cut it back to standard long shaft length, as it just looks so long, and weird.
It has great compression and spark, so it won’t take much to get running.
I do have some old bent type thumb screws, so I will fit those.
I plan on just cleaning it up, and leaving it as is.
Does anybody have a pic of the oil filler gun, for topping up the gearbox.?
Is it similar to a grease gun?

I have just measured the driveshaft, and it is 26 1/2 inches, from top of flags, to top of gearbox.

Also, this part was bolted to the driveshaft tube. It’s solid brass, and looks to be an original piece.
Could this have been part of the original side mount.?

The original drive tubes were 26 1/16" long. This includes within the pump housing. The original had a hole either side at the top 6" below the top of flange and another hole for the nipple 19 3/8" below the top hole or 5/8" from the bottom. The driveshaft fits into the housing for about 2 5/8".

Will be interesting to see if the drive shaft inside has been lengthened and the exhaust, water pipe and clutch rod modified. (edit: just read your post on exhaust)

The side mount had two halves bolted together with a capped spindle to attach to bracket. Yes that is part of the side mount less the cap but with split pin.

Left click to enlarge and then again. Also that is the fuel pipe you will require.

Crated one. Your motor # is only 141 different.

Thanks hugz an seagull 101,
Fantastic info. Much appreciated.
I have just noticed that the tank straps, are worm drive clamps.!
I thought mine had been changed, but obviously not.
My driveshaft tube is 26 1/2 inch from the top of the flange,to the top of the pump housing, plus whatever length is inside the housing.
Clutch rod looks unmodified . I will need to double check. The work that has been done, has been by a craftsman.
I will look for, and replace the fuel pipe.
All very exciting. ( to me anyway LOL)
Cheers
