Evinrude "Detachable rowboat motor"

Post by warwick »

"Clearing out the shed" ... and would like to move on a very old Evinrude outboard.

My father had it since i can remember and I'm almost 50 -

Complete motor together with some other (older) parts.

The motor is largely complete turns over fine and has compression and drives the prop with little backlash.

Steel tank is perforated - definitely one for the enthusiastic collector / restorer.

Had contact with some communication with an american collectors a while ago but the cost of shipping to the states (its probably 40kg) was prohibitive. Here's what he said....

Hello Warwick,

I would date your complete motor at 1914.
Here is why:
The flywheel magneto was first offered in 1914. Yours has that feature.
The exhaust manifold/muffler is not water cooled. That feature was added in 1915-16.
The 1913 and earlier motors were battery ignition only.
The parts motor has the battery ignition flywheel.

Up to and including 1912. Evinrude did not use a protective skeg on the gear case.
If the other motor did not originally have a skeg..then it is a pre 1913 motor.
They are extremely desirable here in the states.
They are not "rare" but are definitely "scarce".
They were 1 1/2hp. The 1913 and later motors were 2hp and up.
A large portion of Evinrude's early production was shipped to Northern Europe.
It is not uncommon for 1912 an earlier motors to turn up in Sweden and Finland.
I know of one in Russia !

Hope I can find someone that will be able to provide a good and loving home for this.
