Spark issues with a 1981 British Seagull EFNR 110

Post by cajuncook1 »

Gents, I just acquired a 1981 British Seagull EFNR 110 motor. 8)

Initially, I had spark but now no spark. I know this motor has a CDI type of ignition and if the spark goes you just change the cdi module.

Before I purchase a new cdi module, I have a couple of additional questions.

- is there any safety or kill switch on this model motor that would prevent spark?

- where could I purchase a new a cdi module for this motor and the price?

- the recoil on the motor engages at times and not at others. Do the engagement pawls wear out easy? It easily pulls out and retracts, but misses a lot to engage.

Thanks for your time and advice gentlemen!!

I believe the CDI ignitions are available on an exchange basis only, and they are not cheap plus you would need to pay postage to send old one to the UK plus nostage for new one back to you. You will also need o determine if you have a mark III or mark VI ignition. Tell us if a groove around circumfirence of flywheel.
Those recoil starters are in my opinion junk. Much easier with rope around flywheel sheave.

If it were me, and the CDI ignition is bad, I would replace with the Wipac Mark II (points) ignition and forget the recoil.

I don't think that CDIs fails so easily. Maybe replacing the spark plug cap is the way to go at first.
I love the 10600/145 turns!!!

new spark plug ; plug lead and cap. That's the way to go after checking if there is a spark.

I have the same recoil on a Silver Century, it works expectionally well never has given any trouble. It does have a more substantial base that fastens it to the crankcase however, so that maybe a place to check for problems.

Gentlemen, thanks for your responses and insight. Sorry, I have not responded sooner, but work and family have kept me pretty busy lately. I will look at the high tension lead and the cap on that wire.

If, my cdi power pack is out who can I contact to find out pricing and shipping??

Again, thank you gentlemen for kindly offering your advice and time.

I think John at SOS can do an exchange. Worth asking him.

Depending on which CDI pack you have, you may not be able to remove or change the HT lead.
White CDI - yes
Brown/black - no
