What makes you think it is not an SD? Looks like one to me, even has the right side mount, fuel pipe etc? Its even fitted to an army boat by the looks of it

No I don't believe it is an SD.

so we have :

Correct tank and cap.

Correct short non finned water jacket cylinder.

Correct close to exhaust bottom feed fuel pipe.

Correct flywheel magneto with small rope pull.

Correct gear change lever.

Correct ali tank mount.

Correct throttle lever.

Correct galvanised cylinder.

Correct unplated exhaust.

Correct dull plated drive tube.

Correct side mount lug on drive tube.

Correct fuel tap.

Correct flywheel nut.

Wrong float bowl.

Wrong tiller arm and grip, or earlier type (as ON or OP)

So what are you surmising "ON SD" transition motor, preproduction example, ministry photographed.

I'm with you H-A. Do we know where that photo came from? If it was from say a manual it could well be an early "pre production" engine, with a few early bits from pre SD engines.

as for decals The British seagull decal was already in use before the SD I believe so the means to produce that particular feature were was already in place.

You're quite right in your observations. The carb is almost the same as ON/OP versions, so's the tiller arm. But the throttle is a cheaper (Amal) one, and there are no cylinder fins. I submit that it's hardly likely that British Seagull (or at least the handful of people associated with British Seagull at the time) would have provided a "bitsa".

What's the date on the manual that photo is taken from? And what's the Mark number associated with it?

To my mind the SD was essentially a cheaper and easier to manufacture version of the pre-war motors. Less costly finishing, a drive shaft that didn't require machining, cheaper throttle, no fins etc. Compare with tools and the like, where a workmanlike finish still bearing machining marks was frequently stamped "war finish" so that users wouldn't assume that this was, for example, the usual standard of presentation from King Dick or whoever.

The one in the photo isn't an ON/OP. We can't see the drive shaft, but we can see the lack of polish and plating, and we can see the throttle and the cylinder head. I believe it to be an SN.

Propspring appeared on the DON & the DOP circa 1938.

I was told by an ex Seagull Manager that the last of the prewar carbs used a reversed swan neck float chamber but have never seen one & didn't really understand quiet what he meant, this might be one.

The SN did have a prop spring.

The DON and DOP were ordinary ON and OP motors fitted with a prop spring. I understand they were retro-fitted.

The patent for the prop spring was finally granted in 1944.

Very unusual as all the ON, OP's had cush hub props, the SN was a prop spring, & the SD had a large brass top hat bush.
