The military spares book is a help here, one would have thought that it must have catered for all variations?

The Holy Grail of wartime British Seagull motors must surely be the SN/SNP of 1942..

It causes me a great deal of distress when your right Charles!

Only one of each of those known to be in existance, up till now!

CHARLES UK & CHARLES P

Is there any way i can get a copy of the military spares book (photocopy or similar) without causing distress to copyrights and publications etc.
i'd love to have a look through it at some point.

From the data i've gathered so far with 102's of all ages, it would seem that the early post war years of production are the most confusing to a lot of us.From around 1950 onwards, things start to make much more sense with regard to cylinders,gearboxes/props, mounts etc. and just the general fit and finish of these motors.

Anything you can let me have will be a great help.

As with the rest of you guys out there, keep the data coming. The more i get, the more it all makes sense :D (fills in the gaps) and there are a LOT of gaps!

I've got an original war department parts list, I'll see if I can scan it and share on here.

ANDREW

From the looks of it, not too bad! (apart from the mag)
1 nipple on the gearbox probably indicates a transition into the 1950's. Closer inspection shows a "sub ejector" pump housing and "bow tie" prop which i would expect is correct. The gearbox with only 1 nipple and the end cap with no drain plug i think is also correct
slotted core plug on the cylinder (i have my own theories on these, as does CHARLES)
Bent thumbscrews on the mounting might be correct (as viewed from your hemisphere) but probably not up here!

I like it. Its got potential

send me the data when your ready :D

PROGRESS REPORT

Well,i'm making some headway with this research now. 30 different entries and counting, but still a lot of blank areas!

i've just spent the last couple of days going through a LOT of older posts going right back to when this forum first started!
Amazing what some of you have posted! And the pics tell a lot as well.

I will be putting up the "list" as it stands at the moment shortly. (still working out a few bugs) but there are definitely a few patterns evolving.
Thoughts and discussions always welcomed

Anyone with a 102, doesn't matter how old or new it is, i need it's data.
Dont worry, the identity of who owns it will be kept secret.
Dont want anybody's pride and joy getting stolen from all this.

I'm still working on a "questionaire" which hopefully will simplify things a lot.

That gave me a chuckle, never considered port or starboard was dependent on where I was viewing. When on a starboard reach if I look astern will I then be on a port reach?

Nice long list there. Should get to the bottom of things.

Well Hugo If you stay away from the "Beach Reach" all will be well aye?

I just thought i'd try to illustrate some of the differences to look out for with these older seagulls.
I've had a few discussions with other forum members about this and thought it would be good to show you.
I'm fairly certain that these differences fall into place with the smaller motors as well.
Take a look at the photos below to see what i'm talking about.

IGNITION SYSTEM THIS TIME
take a close look at the baseplates, what i'm trying to describe is the RIM or sometimes the lack of a rim on some of these magnetos.
There is also another villiers magneto that has a 3/4 round rim to the baseplate and i beleive this would have appeared on motors from the early 60's right till the end of the villiers era when the introduction of the wipac magneto replaced it in 1967.
Attachments
mk1 villiers came immediately after the COOLIE as found on 102's of similar age. RIMLESS but with a large "flange" (1946/1950 approx.)

updated mk1, still RIMLESS but now "flangeless" (my guess would be 102's and 40's from 1950/1953 approx.)

later still but this time with a "half round rim" (my guess is 102's and 40's from 1953/4 up to early 60's)

Would the RIM on the last photo be something to keep a throttle cable from rubbing on the flywheel?

Always wondered about that.......................
