NICE but............

later style gearbox (with slots not holes)
later style prop (for this age it should really have a "bowtie" not a hydrofan)
engine block seems correct with slotted "welch plug"
NO SPARK PLUG!!! (oooh, lots of moisture in the bore, could be stiff to turn!)

the rest seems correct

good motors the older 102's, i love em to bits

Yes i saw it to and thought i'd shut up, and try my luck.
Always wanted an AC since there my initials.

Motor must be 50-51 by serial AC17964, might have been refurbished,in OZ, so no R stamp, but i have 3 102's all ready so i don't NEED another motor? Or do I?

My collection so far
D,C,AC X2,AD,AHC,THC. I could do with a few more (an early AHC, a later AD,AC,a TD,TC) always looking for something interesting.
I also have an "experimental" 102 which i use for testing purposes (different ignitions,carbs,gearboxes etc)

Some of these parts are starting to get few and far between at the moment.
Very often the only way to complete one project is to buy another "donor" for the bits you need.
Then you end up with a lot of "mongrel motors" that either work or dont?

There is actually a bowtie prop illustrated with it. The 'Hydrofan' prop was sold as an after market accessory, offering a performance boost.

It says 'OVERLAND' on the lid.

Quote from a letter from British Seagull to the owner of AD 40214 on 18th February 1958 from a Mr D.B. Allison Service manager

"Yes, the latest 102 Hydrofan propeller will give a better performance ... these props. are obtainale from us,
price 34/6 each, plus postage & packing 5/3d."

On the bottom or the page in raised red type either side of the sailor logo are the words.
"The imposable can be done at once..... Miracles take a little longer"
You have to admire that.

Included in the letter was an advertising poster for the 102, 102plus 40 minus and the Super 40 plus.
The text make wonderful reading, (and some of it might be true) SAdly its 65cm by 50 so i can't scan it to share.

The book makes no mention of the plug gap any were but contains this very useful piece of information.

"The spark plug is a very important feature and should last at least six weeks under normal conditions of service."

Maybe one more 102 would be ok, then i would have four, thats not to many. is it.

Yep I should have picked the gearbox plug. Realistic starting price.

Having the "overland" stencil.... is that common? Did they have different stencils for the domestic market against export? Bit hard to get to Oz overland

Bit far for "take me home" hopefully one of our fraternity member gets her. Box will make a good template. Wonder if they still have the lid butterfly nuts... (same as tiller nut?) Always consider it a shame the motor faces tank down otherwise they would display well crated.

Can you photo the poster? Sounds as though an SD should be on your bucket list next

Nice discussion.

I like Charles input about prop upgrade makes the gearbox a bit more legit aye? I must admit that this may well be a "Cross Over" between model years that only Charles/Charles would know.

Fascinating for 102 enthusiasts like me.

Interesting things these 102 gearboxes!

From the data i've uncovered so far with these, the slotted inlet on the gearboxes wasn't "normal" until about 1957/8 (still trying to accumulate enough data to confirm this) but it would suggest that this motor has been got at as part of some "running repairs" possibly!
All said and done, these 102's are one of my favourites, particularly pre 1950 with a lot of influences from the SD's that came before it.

It would seem that gearbox swaps are something that happens a lot with most seagulls, not just 102's, probably due to a lack of maintenence (sadly) and the gears inside take a hell of a hammering and eventually wear out, hence the need to swap to something less noisey!
According to the manuals, gear oil should be replaced/renewed every 10 hours or so, but realistically how many owners over the years have been this meticulous? (not many i would think) and as a result this is what we see nowadays, ODD GEARBOXES that dont match!

Anybody going to have a bid on this?

Bidding on this could be a hit or miss arrangement as the seller is a newby Ebay at a Zero score.

What would you do?

At the very best the thing will have to be posted to get the best $ result for any seller aye?.

I see zero effort from this seller to oblige so far.
