SD & SDP Poll

Post by JERSEYMAN »

Hello all, I thought a simple anonymous poll for SD's and SDP's might help answer a few questions, this poll will not be accurate as to how many motors are out there as some of you have several but it will answer some queries if enough people participate.

Thank You

Good idea, you should do one for Marstons too. It would be good to have an idea how many are out there.

These polls are such a great way to gather information without being intrusive. As I gather, a lot of people follow this forum but not that many participate in the disscissions, which I totally understand, not everyone has something to say about Seagulls but are still interested in them, this is why these anonymous polls are great, everybody has a chance to participate without the trouble of commenting if they wish not to.

But please do participate,

Thank You.

I cannot change the poll once it's started but maybe do another one to find how many motors are around.

Won't this rather disturb Oyster's endeavours to compile a register of Wartime motors & their production details / specifications?

Can visitors respond to one of our polls?

Do I take from you answer Jon, that your taking over the complete 102 range, from 1940 until the present?

Of course one of the problems is many motors may well of been altered over time
but ignition units less so...

We are not sure when those "Coolie hat ignition" parts were removed from the parts list or if they were even on there, but by 1950 ish when the Dutch military bought their SDs & spares they were supplied with Mk 1 Villiers, a much cheaper alternative (can you confirm this Jan).

So would it follow? that at some point soon after the war, ignition problems were fixed by replacement by the current stock item, just like British Seagull have done with every ignition change since.

The most cost effective repair is a complete replacement, 10 minutes max, that's 6 an hour, or repair, 4 or 5 a day by a Seagull technician.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

All the SD's I've seen in Holland have the 'Coolie Hat' ignition.
But all the ex MoD ignition parts I have are Villiers MkI parts (flywheels, rope pulleys, 'for the world' covers etc.). The labels on the boxes are dated 1958-1967.

Comparing to the dozens of SD's for sale in Holland during the last years I've never seen an SDP in Holland.

Hi Jan, I imagine that when the SDs were sold to the Dutch MOD, then the current spareable part at that time would have been Villiers Mk1 (Flat top) As that was the then production item.

It may be of use to point out that most "flat top" Villiers flywheels have clues as to their date of manufacture stamped on the rim under the cover plate.

That's a really good point, being able to date the flat top mk.1 villiers flywheels

I can help here with a date on a "flat top" flywheel .
I have 1 here that is very clearly dated 46 (and this was fitted to a D) which after some discussion with CHARLES L, we've come to the conclusion that D and C models were probably (but as yet NOT CONFIRMED) made up from "left over" parts at that time.

So it kind of ties in with this.
It's worth looking under the flywheel cover sometimes. Tells quite a lot.

Havn't yet decided if the SD/SDP line of inquiries is something that i can do justice to. (yet)...
