Merc 60 For Side Rack

Post by Collector Inspector »

This makes two now but I refuse to turn to the Dark Side Blackness rest assured.

Story goes that this was repaired by R. A. Whiteside & Co in Fremantle and was never picked up by the owner. Bob Whiteside, business owner and respected boating community participant in Perth, retired and kept the motor for some reason.

Bob passed not that long ago. Through a mutual friend I now have it.

Bob's testing gear and odds and sods.

The engine has been laying like pictured for at least 25 to 30 years. Turns spark compression. Mercury unpainted metal bits locked up. Mercury paint is flaking.

I think that it will be OK when time for lubrication and freeing up.

Anyway...........A good outcome and the proper home for it.

Serial# 1494894

Nice decals, the red ones are '70-'71.Blue '72,depending if the blue faceplate with "Keikhaefer". If Mercury Marine, and from what I can see it is, '73 on.Worth a few bob as NOS on flea bay, number says it '63 but I think it could be older as I can't find a 6HP with a number close to that.Nice find, and this was before the dark side

Hi B

Good score on that Merc, year of manufacture is early 1962, because of serial no.
check out this site for some info and parts if needed - http://store.oldmercs.com/category_s/899.htm

Have a look at my photobucket for stickers and what it originally looked like.

Good luck with it...

Great score B

Mercury runs through my veins. I love the stuff.

You've done extremely well here.

BTW, another Merc 60 on Gumtree at the moment. Asking price $700, way over the top IMO, but I'm sure someone will grab it.

Nice Sunday so finished chores, opened a beer and thought about cleaning the work wagon...................

Nah!

Had a peruse of merc.................so much paint flake and dust of ages.

Out with the high volume kero gun and followed by the pressure washer.

Everything wanting to fall off fell off! I will treat bare corroded metal and apply etch for the time being.

There is an issue in the gearbox.....................it is full of kero and auto trans fluid for a while..........maybe sticky forward gear locating to pawl spring etc.

No rush to make pretty...................useable repeatable reliably 1st. Gulls to attend to...............

Of note is that this power head is Hurricane while my other one is Comet. This one red flywheel the other I remember as yellow.

These are kinda cool............shame they painted them black and used cheaper metals where it counts

Any one have a link?

700 is rather over the top. Maybe restored with warranty..................

They are not that special.

Careful Bruce looks like you might be slipping.

Go and get an Evinrude or Johnson out, that will help you get back to normality.

I did think about Mercs but was put off by the tales of woe getting them apart.

No worries..........I still have a grip on reality

Problems pulling them apart yes. The one on Gumtree, over priced to Hell, shows the evidence of trying to get the gearbox off.......smashed up cav plate so basher was right handed with the hammer.

The problem was the drive shaft rusting on BOTH ends. It was common practice to drill a +1" hole in the leg so that a torch could cut the drive shaft inside. Then everything came apart to be sorted............................until next time

Same for the 800 same seller.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/royal-pa ... 1079148225

No pics under the cowl.......................Probably cost the seller nothing. Parts maybe money in starter, distributor and carbs only.

Mercs with rubber plugs in leg were common. Sometimes there will be a lubricated stainless shaft inside depending on model year.

Many West Australian early Merc Dealers ended up pulling the pin because of this and related issues.

They were used to handling the "Mark" series and earlier.

Sigh
