coolie ignition for SDP

Post by headdownarseup »

As it says above
i need a complete ignition system for an SDP i've been working on for some time now. It's currently got a flat top villiers fitted to it but it's not right according to what i've found out.

The coolie must be complete with the flywheel and aluminium cover plate with the rope winder. It doesn't need to make a spark as i can sort that out later.

It must be affordable. I don't want to pay a kings ransom for it. (less than £50 please) i know they're old but they're not priceless. Not yet anyway.
Cheaper the better.

Why is the flat top incorrect Jon?

Is yours super early in the production run.......before the AC line commenced.

Hi Jon,

Are you still looking for a SD coolie hat ignition?

I've got a few SD flywheels, ignition plates and covers in the shed.

I can't help you with the Villiers rope pulleys.

Bruce
SDP11449 currently has a "borrowed" FLATTOP ignition (dated 1950 actually) from a scrapped motor just to get it running. SDP's are considered a "wartime" motor from 42-46 and anything we've seen before in this family NORMALLY has a coolie ignition doesn't it? Why not with this one! As Charles keeps saying, unless Dr.Who travelled back in time to the end of ww2 in his Tardis, things are as they are for a reason. We just haven't quite got there yet as far as the data has been collected.
Definitely well before any C,D,HC, or AC,AD,or AHC.
As Hugo starts getting more data i hope things will become a lot clearer.

Jan, good to hear from you again. :P
Yes, if you have a baseplate and flywheel that's in reasonable condition then i can definitely find a home for it. I've just found a rope pulley so i should be fine with that.
PM me the details and we can get things moving.

What about your research Jon? You have been researching SDs for 3 years, but not shared anything. Are you going to let Hugo have what you have recorded? We are all waiting to see what results you have.

My view is that SDP engines seem to carry later numbers in the SD range, and had later features such as chromed exhausts, and later flat top magnetos, albeit with screw type points.

Sadly no SDP's have come to light yet in my data.

In our overview researches we came to the conclusion that around 90% had chrome exhausts, all had cast aluminium tank brackets as the cost of the press tools for the brass handed tank brackets would be illogical when you've got all the patterns & tooling for the cast ones, & the stores don't have to carry 2 brass spares (left & right) just 1 cast one.

I've owned an SDP in the 6000's.
