Rare (?) Early Series Forty

Post by Gannet »

BS records indicate that approx. 38243 off Early Series Forty engines of the range F, FV, FVP, LM and LS were produced.
However the really odd thing is that I am only aware of one production LM - and that is LM29941, which is in my garage.
The LM is quite simply an LS with the smaller 10:21 gearbox and the shorter length tubes and pipe. Ie it is the 'minus' model between the FV and the SJM.
So, why does it not appear that there are more LMs out and about? Surely there must have been a lot of them produced? Somebody must have one. Does anybody know of another one?

I recall seeing one on eBay a while back. Also hasn’t the “other” Charles got one? It does seem very that so few are about though. Why start making a minus model in some numbers, stop and then start again later?

Hi John,
Its got the same tank as later LSs ie with the sharper edge rads compared to the early LSs. It has a brass 10" tiller as per the LS. It will be like your LS30524.

How is yr FV?

Hi Adrain,
Are you sure it was an LM on e bay? With a replacement 'modern' head it looks like a later FV.
Yes, Charles has an LM, which I believe that I am right in saying, that Charles thinks was put together later and used an odd serial number. I hope that I am being fair in regarding it as not a production LM. Please correct me Charles if I have got that wrong.

Jacob,
Thanks for your interesting observation about the one on facebook.
Was it advertised as an LM, or did you find out its serial number? Was it a matter of you visually identifying it as an LM, without knowing its serial number?

John,
Thanks for the photo of the FVP. Are you able to find out it's serial number?

Thanks John. I wasn't able to find it on e bay, but it doesn't matter, as I have got sufficient info on it.
I did bump into FVP6317, which is for sale in Oban. It was previously on e bay in December 2018.

Thanks Jacob,

I wish I had seen that. I am very keen on recording as many Early Series Forty outboards as I can, so that the information can be collated and more can be found out about this series. If you see another one, let me know! Thanks.
