FV 2844

Arrived today.

The only problem is the gearbox with no skeg.

I have everything else bits and bobs in boxes to get it correct. Will get another block welded up and recon the head like the FVP.

It turns over nicely by hand.

Could it have just been damaged, then cut and filed or ground back?

Have you not seen "cotton reel" thrust blocks before?
Normal on FV's like these (my SJM210 has these too) as do the 3 LS's i have.

Best of luck with the gearbox though.
Will you weld or will you swap with another?

Nice to see another FV to be restored and looked after, and quite an early one.
1. The carb choke has a 'bolt' in the outer end. I have seen these on lawn mowers, but not on Seagulls.
2. I cannot see if the bowl is the correct one without the drain hole.
3. It looks possibly as if there isn't a throttle stop which FVs should have.
4. Nice to see that it has the short ear and narrow slot filler cap, which I think is correct for this early FV.
5. Nice to see the single 2/3mm vent hole in the exhaust pipe.
6. As Jon has said the black plastic cotton reel is probably correct. Very early F/FVs were cast aluminium.
7. Is there a gasket between the crankcase halves?
8. It is possible/probable that on early F/FVs, the tank 'support' studs were shorter at 2.3", whereas most are about 2.5". I would be interested in the length of these.
9. Nice to see an original non-webbed early crankcase.

Bruce, good luck with the restoration. I would be interested in the flywheel date and info on the carb and tank.

I am just now revisiting this....... Forgot I had it and then found a gearbox (From Tam).

Spoke to Tam and ........ block magically arrived wrapped up with a ebay deal that the seller would not speak to me as in AU (Turd).

I thank Thomas for his help.

OK

It does not turn over now...........stuck pinion bush in Gbox so no biggy.

Date on flywheel is 7/50.

Carb is a ringer but I have something to use (thank you Charles from ages ago).

It does indeed have a case gasket. I remember some discussion re this?

Steel base gasket and you can see why a new replacement block.......I can get the head welded/refurbished locally if required. (Done that before for a FVP)

I have added the flywheel date of July 1950. This is the same date as my FV2682, FV2821 and FV3048, so its almost certainly got the original flywheel.
Blocks vary in length as do the combustion chamber depths. I think that this can lead to very poor performance. I try to achieve no more than about a 5 mm clearance between the top of the piston and the head. I have had engines with about 9 mm and were very gutless. I measure it by using plastercene fed down the plug hole.

I have had a head welded up to repair bad corrosion. I was surprised how easy it was to file it flat and then use emery paper on a flat block to get it very flat and smooth. As well as to reduce the combustion chamber depth a bit.

Good luck with it. These early FVs are the best!
