does anyone know if the following would work on an amal 420/A/2 carb as fitted standard on the 170?

Yes it should (if the cable is long enough) fit all seagull carbs!

Agreed.
Cable length is the critical point here, not the actual control mechanism.

I have just been informed that the cable definitely wont fit and that the tiller itself wont bolt onto a 170,
The throttle mechanism itself will work.
