Recently purchased little forty

The prop doesn't look like its spent much time on Swannay or Harray.
I have a little forty and they are nice motors

Thanks for posting the photos. I have added some of the details visible in the photos onto the List.
What do you plan to do with it? I am sure that you are aware that it has been 'modernised' with some later parts, but nice to see another LS around.

Why is it a little forty ?

Keith's right. Little model forty was how the first F and FVs were called. The later FVP is called the super forty plus, due to the different gearbox.

So LM is a later little forty, LS is a later super forty plus. after SJP and SJM it's forty plus and forty minus I believe?

I am reluctant to say what shouldn't be on it, as you ( or in this case the previous owner) can put whatever parts on it that you want.
If however you want to return it to its original specification, then the following parts will need removing:-
1. Gearbox. It should be an earlier polished version with round inlet holes. Probably with 3 inlet holes.
2. Pump housing. it should again be an earlier one with the clamp bolt on the forward side of the casting.
3. Tiller. This should be a 10" brass one.
4. Throttle lever. This should be the earlier long lever type. I cannot comment on the carb, but quite often when a later throttle lever is fitted, a later carb is also fitted. The original would have had a 7/16" venturi. The later are often 1/2".
5. Tilt hook. This looks like a black plastic one, whereas originally it would have been aluminium.
6.Transom bracket. I think I am right in saying that it should have the security bar on the port side and not on the starboard side.

But enjoy it in whatever spec floats your boat!

Keith is right in implying that an LS is not a Little Model Forty. This name refers to the earlier 1948/9 model F. And I think to the FV. The FVP and the LS I don't think should really be referred to as a Little Model Forty.
I call, for convenience, the F,FV.FVP.LM and LS as the early series Forty models.

From what I have seen, right or wrong, FV/P, were Little model forty's and even advertised as a baby Seagull.
Fourteenth edition manual for a little forty, has some ones FV number on it and later you have manual with little forty and forty plus, so that don't tell us much.
Also you have the Seagull drawing of an LS, called The Super 40 Plus, not a little forty.

A 1951 FVP, the LS looks more like a standard 40, than a little forty.

They were all fixed tiller in design, later ones were modified to side tiller by BS.
