Thanks, everyone. I put it back together and set it (still propless) back in the bucket with an inch or so more of water than before and it worked! A nice stream of luke warm water came out at all thottle settings, except the very lowest. You fellows were absolutely right!

Hello Vic and Timberman - you must be right on about the depth (or maybe even the shape) of my water barrel. I removed the lower end and everything was very clean - no dirt or corrosion. Thanks, Vic, for the reply. Today or tomorrow I will try to get at the water pump. The good news is that I can turn both those screws that hold the gear housing to the pump housing! That middle one was a bear to break loose - but I managed without the need for heat (the "propane wrench") Al
