Re: 40 plus cut out

I wonder how the 8-COM plugs were with 'whiskering' ? They, of course, had the ground electrode to the side of the central jobbie.

Re: Forum not very lively!

I've been making-up some beehives from old pallets. Was going to buy wood from Wickes - then I saw their prices. I reckon pallet wood is better - it's the same cheap softwood, but well-seasoned ... and FREE. Nothing much on the Seagull front - I've got a couple still in bits waiting for the paint to...

Re: Gearbox oil leaking out

Liam - what grade of oil are you using - 140 weight ? You could always use SAE 250 if you can find it.
But don't even consider EP90 !

Make the most of it (says he, who's been inside sheltering most of the day), apparently tomorrow it's all change ... and I can get the grass cut, at last.

Re: Fuel Tank Identification??

... i would never keep more than one of each type ...what would be the point? :D Well, I guess it all depends on why you have Seagull outboards in the first place. If you're engaged in the marine engineering equivalent of stamp-collecting, then I can see your point. But if you actually use these en...

Oh - well batted, that man ...

So what was it ? Nawh - on second thoughts, it's probably best for mere mortals not to ask about such things. :D

Re: Loose bushes in crankcase

Hi Rolf I hate 'not knowing' stuff, so have been Googling around this morning: FWIW, it appears that sintered bronze, although still a bearing material of choice for electrical motors etc (which we know about), is rarely seen these days inside internal combustion engines - I found one reference to s...

Re: Loose bushes in crankcase

Hi Rolf - well, I haven't got this problem with bearings myself, it was simply a case of having seen a shaft with cross-hatching to provide an interference fit for a bearing - a technique I've never seen before - and then hearing about bushes spinning in a crankcase and making a connection between t...

Re: Loose bushes in crankcase

I've been a bit hesitant to suggest this, as I fully expect some scathing comments, but ... If the bushes are so loose that they can be easily removed, then one rather crude way of enlarging their Outside Diameter would be to fit them (i.e. clamp them between nuts) onto a threaded rod to match their...

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj60/Horsley-Anarak/brackettypeb.jpg Bear with me guys, as I don't think the anaesthetic has worn off yet - certainly my head is still full of cotton wool - but just to check: the items marked as '61' are presumably to hook under the gunwhale and hold the assembly...

You shouldn't be able to do that with the pinion ... sounds as if the pinion sleeve bearing has come loose.

Re: Forty-Plus piston rings

So Niander might think there are one or two sad gits about (?) - well this sad ol' git just couldn't leave this one alone, and went for the full on-line research job this afternoon .... Ok - if anyone else feels tempted to play - look up Piston-Ring Tribology . Tribology being the science and engine...

Re: Forty-Plus piston rings

Problem solved: although one mystery has been replaced by another - albeit one of seemingly trivial importance. On many pistons I've seen over the years, the piston diameter is uniform: from the skirt bottom right up to the crown. However, the attached graphic shows two Hepolite pistons of different...

Re: Forty-Plus piston rings

What exactly is the problem do you have good compression ? if yes i would say you dont have a problem maybe it needs running to polish up the rings Read the first post - it's not a problem - just a curiosity. I wasn't going to pull the piston, but as this may be of interest (well, to Charles at lea...

Re: Forty-Plus piston rings

Check again to make sure that what looks like the ring is cast iron, or is it me looking at it the wrong way around? Apologises - when I said 'lower ring', I meant the bottom piston ring, not as shown on the graphic (which was upside down - duhhh ! - sorry about that). Have re-uploaded the graphic ...
