Not gonna use the Champions. Used instead the old (original?) NGK. It worked.
Backflushed the water pump, took a chance and cranked with fingers crossed, and hallelujah, it ran solid.
So my Nova Scotia bro-in-law is real happy. Took the trank off for traveling, found sediment, and a piece of brass ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
Well, I got some plug wire which seems fine. Got a Champion D16 plug which seems to have the correct threads for the engine.
Also got a NGK LZFH (Stock no. 8381) which seems to be totally a misfit!
The wire screws in fine on the one end, but it is not threaded, but is a snap-in type which neither ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
Got Screw out, pulled wire out, cleaned both - clever little arrangement.
Continuity in wire from the end I pulled out to the little cut I made just before the plug end.
No continuity to plug end, so guess next is to cut a little off the one end, and resolder the plug end.
Hopefully after putting ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
OK, got the little brass tip out and staring at the little screw - bright and shiny.
Will try to remove it and see where it takes me.
Thanks again,
Jim

Re: Removal of dome nut
You are referring to the "thing" I removed from under the coil after removing the retainer, yes? There is a spring with a little brass tip that springs in and out - I guess to make contact. There is no way to get a screwdriver - no matter how small - in there unless I pull the brass tip off the ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
OK, thanks much.
Pulled it off, so have the plug wire in my hand.
Zero continuity between plug end and that little springy copper thing - pushed all the way in with the dvm prod.
Now from points to ground is around 1.2 ohms.
The nipple inside where the plug wire to ground is just over 5k ohms ...

Read the post as suggested at

Also watched the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT8rk5QWgS0

Re: Removal of dome nut
Forgot to mention to you - that little snippet from the post also tells me it's OK to have continuity from the points to the baseplate.
Odd. Guess someone needs to tell Fluke.
Still need to read the entire article and I guess all other posts having to do this Wipac character.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Removal of dome nut
OK, thanks. Printed and will have a read of it (old school - still read books on paper).
Sorry if I am repeating questions perhaps already answered. Will do more research.
Guess, like all newbees, just want someone to say "here's your problem mate, just do this and it's fixed!"

Re: Removal of dome nut
Ummmm... I am confused a bit by you saying get the points working right first. That was the last thing I tried, cleaned and gapped them but no fire from the plug (also tried a different, new plug - now it could be that the wire from the plug to the coil (condenser, is there one?) is bad, which I ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
Hello again.
An update - been slow going on this engine.
I got the flywheel off - ended up supporting from a tree from the clamps with rope as a safety to keep it from hitting the ground - not necessary really if I had thought about it - can't hit the ground with nut still on.
Anyway - then tied ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
Tried cleaning them with some emery paper - kinda difficult to get in there - but gonna try again.
Didn't try to re-gap them yet - it actually seems pretty wide so needs it.
Seems the symptoms I see wouldn't be caused by a too wide gap - like no continuity at plug end from either point, but yes ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
Hi again from sunshiny Flordia.
Thanks for all replies and suggestions.
Trying to figure out why no spark and here's what I've done.
1. Magneto is magnetized.
This seems like a good thing.
2. Continuity from anywhere (including engine block, points) to tip of sparkplug wire (or to plug itself ...

Re: Removal of dome nut
OK. Got the dome nut off. Whacked it a few times with the flywheel not being held and it didn't work.
So rigged up my chain visegrips - had to improvise a bit to get it to reach - and one whack with strong right hand whilst holding the visegrip with weak left hand and it was loose.
Didn't seem so ...
