Re: Disassembly of a stuck Forty Minus SJM

The piston top edge was stuck just above the exhaust port. I figured if I tried the grease method it probably would have moved but would have stopped when the grease leaked into the exhaust port. I bought a short section of aluminum pipe that was 1.75" in diameter with a 1/8" wall. This pi...

Removing Driveshaft Collar Pin

Don't want to damage anything. I have a replacement gearbox for my FPL has grit in that needs to be cleaned out and my SJM gearbox that is stiff. There is a brass pin #6 in the drive shaft collar #5. What's the recommended way to remove the brass pin? File off one end and drive it out with a punch? ...

Re: Disassembly of a stuck Forty Minus SJM

A few days ago I poured some kerosene in the block and used a section of a shop towel as a wick. Let it burn for about 30 minutes. 20200904_113046 (Medium).jpg After it burned off, took some ice and dropped it into the inverted assembly to cool the piston. Turned it back up and used a hammer with wo...

Re: Photos: Cutaway and a couple 102s

Search for "racing seagulls" or "seagull racing". Where is that located Andrew? That cutaway in on a real Seagull stand. If your going to visit them Stinch, go at race time, it's a good day out with a very friendly bunch all with a common interest & rumours of the islanders ...

Re: Disassembly of a stuck Forty Minus SJM

The Evapo-Rust soak worked really good. After 24 hours the cylinder walls below the piston were smooth and I only wiped the inside with a cloth. The dark spots don't feel like pits. After a water rinse, I dried as much as I could with a shop towel then sprayed it with WD-40. 20200902_181047 (Medium)...

Re: Photos: Cutaway and a couple 102s

Looks like an interesting museum. Hope to visit Bermuda in the next few years and will have to make a point of stopping by. Are old Seagulls still found around Bermuda?

Re: Disassembly of a stuck Forty Minus SJM

Stinch, what do you think was causing the head screws to stick in place so tight? Thanks for an informative thread that doesn't involve the use of a big hammer & an electric drill! Seagull made some fine little outboards but I’m not sure what they were thinking with the design of the recessed c...

Re: Disassembly of a stuck Forty Minus SJM

20200830_184339 (Medium).jpg I was able to lift the block partially from the crankcase assembly. The crank turned enough to give enough room to clear the two studs that attach the block to crankcase. 20200830_214907 (Medium).jpg Even better 20200830_215314 (Medium).jpg Open crankcase with access to...

Re: Disassembly of a stuck Forty Minus SJM

The collar on the propeller shaft does not have a spring pin (as my 1969 Forty Plus) but appears to be solid and peened at both ends. Is this normal for an early 60’s Forty Minus? Is the removal as simple as filing one end of the pin and pushing it out with a punch? Can a spring pin be used or do I ...

Disassembly of a stuck Forty Minus SJM

Saw this Forty Minus on Facebook Marketplace about three weeks ago but put it off for a while since I recently bought a Century 100. Did I really need another one Seagull since I have two others that don’t run? Decided to bring it home last week anyway. The seller was local and was only about 20 min...

New Member with FPL1890E9 from CT USA

Hello all, thought I’d make this my first post. My Seagull outboard story began in the late 1970’s when my Dad brought home a 24’ sailboat that came with a Seagull Forty Plus Long Shaft (FPL 1890 E9). While it was under powered for its purpose, my Dad made it work. For many years he used the Seagull...
