Resistance spark plugs? Yamaha engine
I have a couple of Yamaha/Mariner 2hp outboards. I am running an NGK B5HS spark plug in the old 1984 model, which has points. I have now got hold of a much more recent 2002 one which has CDI ignition (it looks almost new!). The cowl has a sticker saying to use a NGK BR5HS spark plug. The handbook sa...

Re: 40 plus recoil starter.
Keith. I thought I still had plenty of pull left.... but after wrestling with that damn spring for ages I now have my doubts. Making a new hook on the end of the spring was easy enough, so thanks for that tip. For the life of me I cannot seem to get the thing back into the housing though. May...

Re: 40 plus recoil starter.
I have managed to get the thing apart and the recoil spring has indeed broken. A couple of inches from the centre of the spiral. Here is a photo of the spring showing the broken bit. 2013-04-01 21.48.50.jpg I will try HA's suggestion of tempering and bending a new end, but if anyone knows where I ca...

Re: 40 plus recoil starter.
Thanks HA I was fearing that it might be a bit of a battle. I think the goggles are a good tip! I have taken part of the mechanism apart and the baseplate inside will not clear the rivets which protrude through the sides of the cover. I can't see a way of clearing those without removing the rivets o...

Re: 40 plus recoil starter.
Hi Keith. The cord looks ok, but I will probably replace anyway, while I am at it. It is the recoil spring. I simply pulled the rope and it stayed out and didn't spring back at all. I can wind the rope back in manually by rotating the disc in the centre, but not sure how to disassemble to get at the...

40 plus recoil starter.
Hi My recoil starter, on my late model 40 plus, seems to have packed up. The rope isn't recoiling into the housing anymore. This is the item in question, just with the first plate removed which was secured with an e-clip. Before I start meddling and risk springs flying everywhere, does anyone have a...

Re: Shear pins
You might be right Keith, I couldnt help thinking that the shear pins were unlikely to be high tech though. Plus the best source seems to be ebay and there is very little guarantee that any advertised on there are actually the original spec anyway, considering the motor is actually 30 years old (whi...

Shear pins
I am looking for a few spare shear pins for an old mariner 2hp. Its a 1984 one with a plastic prop. The shear pin it came with is 22mm long and 3.2mm diamter and seems to be made from stainless steel. I know I can buy them for about £3 each, but is there any reason I cant just buy some standard stai...

Re: Old Mariner/Yamaha outboard
Having done a bit more looking I think this is the right model. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Mariner/2A/646-31100%20AND%20BELOW/GEARHOUSING%20ASSEMBLY/parts.html. Part number 16 I did get a quote, but it was over £20 for a Mariner part, apparently the same part from Yamaha is a bit cheape...

Re: Old Mariner/Yamaha outboard
Thanks Michael. It does look like they stock the part, the postage costs from there are a bit steep though at 15 dollars. I was hoping for a cheap fix. The oil seals from the link I showed averaged about £3 each :) which I why I was hoping I may be able to use one of those. I will ring around and se...

Old Mariner/Yamaha outboard
I have got an old Mariner outboard which I am messing about with. Its a 1984 two horse power job. It runs nicely but I wanted to give it a bit of an overhaul. I dont know if anyone is familiar with one of these motors but I am missing an oil seal in the water/impeller housing. In the image below it ...

Re: Oily plug?
Excellent, thanks Hugz. Being a Seagull I should have realised it would be that simple! That seems to have sorted the problem out nicely. I just backed it off two turns and it drops into gear fine now. If I notice it happening again I will add another turn. I didn't have to drop the leg. It was a ve...

Re: Oily plug?
Thanks. Very good point about it not actually being on a boat, I dont suppose they were designed for wheelie bins! The seagull does have a clutch so I was running it in neutral and also in gear. I will do a proper test run soon and check it out as suggested. I'm looking forward to getting the thing ...

Oily plug?
Just been running my seagull (40+ late model SEFPC) in the test tank and checking it over. I was using an oldish champion plug and it took a couple more pulls to start, I was about to stop when it fired up. I ran it for about 10 - 15 mins till hot then allowed it to empty the carb of fuel. When it c...

I saw that top photo on ebay as well H-A. Not sure if that passes health and safety regulations!!
Maybe it is some new fangled LPG powered outboard
Stelios, I just thought the motor bike had a mobile beer dispensor strapped to the back, very practical!
