Re: D9666 restoration
Ok then, the gearbox. I'll come clean and own up now so you dont think i've just been really lucky. I took this to work today and took it apart with the help of an oxy-acetylene gas torch. (works wonders) It all came apart quite easy really, i was very surprised. Normally i end up cursing and sweari...

Re: D9666 restoration
thanks guys i've sussed it (with the help of primary woman). go back up to the top and you'll see the extent of the damage! SHOCKING. In fairness though, this kind of corrosion had probably been going on for decades! Ok, hopefully you can all see where those all important water jackets are now. Poss...

D9666 restoration
Hello again folks. If you're reading this post now, you will have been reading my exploits of a recently purchased seagull? When looking at the original photos on ebay of this motor it originally had an early SD type transom mount which i've been on the lookout for ages for my own SD. So with this i...

Re: SD transome mounts
hi oyster thats interesting because i thought it was the other way around. not that i'm an expert at all just an enthusiastic amateur! what i think i'm going to do is move this topic of conversation to the general section as this thread originally started in the wanted section. just trying to remain...

Re: SD transome mounts
hi hugz well the only reason i bought this motor was for the transom mount only. however, things have moved on a bit now and i just cant bring myself to break it up for parts so i've decided to restore it. as for the skeletal brackets being fitted to the early 102's, i'm not entirely sure. i'm prett...

Re: SD transome mounts
UPDATE i've got the block apart- eventually! not too bad really. there's a bit of play in the wrist pin but the rest seems ok, just very dirty. i've also dug out a spare block which should also look ok, the one with the removable core plugs, so that will go together soon. the ignition system also wo...

Re: SD transome mounts
UPDATE well things are getting interesting, this is not quite what i thought it was? serial number is D9666 which makes this a very early model 102 direct drive from about 1946 ish! the transom mount has already found its way onto my SD and now looks much better for it. i am currently working on get...

Re: SD transome mounts
hi all i've just bought the engine in question from the bay! the block is toast, cracked to hell! gearbox is seized solid, bits missing from the ignition (top cover points box lid) the good bits though are the mounting (the skeletal one that we all like with brass turn down thumbscrews, yum yum! ) a ...

Re: crankcase sealing
fair comment keith. just wondering that's all. I've used some really thick gloopy stuff in the past that looks like golden syrup that's supposed to "help" (and i use the word "help" loosely) with oil burning and compression loss in car engines before, but was just wondering if us...

Re: crankcase sealing
hi all keith, yes i agree that crankcases are not usually a problem but the bushes being phosphor bronze will be a bit softer than the hardened steel crank itself and so will wear quicker leading to leakage. Sometimes, depending on what model you're running, there tends to be a bit of seepage from t...
