Re: cutting out

If there is a condenser in the flywheel, they sometimes increase resistance when they get warm until there is no spark, if there on there way out.

Re: Something Portable

Practical Boat Owner, did free plans for one like that years ago as I built one. If I remember you needed only two sheets of plywood.

Re: Mk1 Ignition system

Condensers used to be a wrap of alloy film rolled up tight with a layer of brown paper to separate each roll and ensure the foil does not touch the metal case. An engine should run for a while with the condenser disconnected, but the point would soon blacken and burn. So if the condenser is suspect ...

Re: Cylinder Block Corrosion

I am not saying I am right but for years I have been putting `cutting oil` in the water of my test tank. Cutting oil for those not knowing is the oil put into water of lathes, drilling and milling machines that make the water go `milky` to help the cutters and protect the machine. I knew the oil as ...

Re: Running issues

Many of the guys on here know much more than me, but the first thing I would do is take the jets out of the carb and make sure they are clean. Sometimes petrol and oil will `dry out` and part block the jets. I sometimes wash mine in a drop of acetone.

Re: brussels at it again?

Whilst cruising `Youtube` I came across a very large ship engine that had the exhaust port at the bottom of the cylinder like a two stroke and a single inlet valve in the cylinder head next to a diesel injector like a four stroke.. It will give them in Brussels something to talk about.

Looks like you got yourself a really nice motor there far better than the rusty lump I have on the back of my boat.

Re: first boat build

Sorry to hear you have been ill, hope you are on the mend. The reason I asked is because I have nearly finished building a 10` 6`` clinker/ply tender to my own design, and my mate up the road is so impressed that he intends to have a go at one himself but at 3/4 scale, ie 8ft long. Anyway if you dec...

Re: sailing terms - translation question

Not the guy to talk about sailing, but if the wind is from land to the sea it is often called simply. "an offshore wind". Likewise a wind from sea on to land " an onshore wind". As for you having to go into the wind to get to shore or whatever then "you tack into the wind&qu...

Re: Latest Old Dear

I`ve never done one, but would it not be possible to rewind with new wire. I have rewound a microwave transformer some time back because it was not possible to get a new one and a Villiers coil is hardly rocket engineering. I would guess there is a thick wire for a certain length with a tail wire go...

Re: Can't get started

The smallest bit of muck on the points will stop you getting a spark. Clean the points again with fine sand paper, I was always told not to use emery cloth, and give them a spray with with an electrical cleaner. MAF cleaner works well. To make a good job I take the points out and clean them with a v...

Re: Retrofitting a kill switch to earlier models.

Some old Villiers stationary engines had a small flat piece of metal on the back of the plate behind the flywheel, that when pushed flat onto a screw behind the piece of metal would short off the spark. If that bit of metal was so set that it rested on the screw at rest the motor would not produce a...
