Crankcase leak
Can anyone tell me what the symptoms of a crankcase leak are and how to fix it? I have a leak on a 1980 40 series I bought and guess I will need to split crankcase and remake joint with a little gasket sealant? Leak is from small area just above the tiller arm stub.

Re: Where should I start
As Oyster says a proper clean of the tank will mean taking it off, swill around some fresh petrol and inverting to get any crud out the filler cap as the worst of the crap should be retained in tank by a fuel filter (fine wire gauze) which is attached to the tap on the end which screws up inside the...

Re: Where should I start
Pre '68 so shouldn't have been converted ... has to run on 10:1. Just make sure and clean out any old crap from inside tank, fuel line and carb bowl with some clean fuel and fill with fresh 10:1 mix. Don't let her rev too high with the prop off as no resistance and don't let her idle on very low rev...

Re: Jammed brass thumbscrews in alloy clamps
Success ..... with only a minor hiccup ..... got a little heavy handed with one which was not keen to budge and snapped the tab off (no patience). Left that one a few days with a bit more WD40 and after another heat and filing two flats on the broken end got that one moving too. Screwed them both ri...

Re: Big end wear?
Afraid I don't have any tool making friends Charles but thanks for the offer. I have since also found that the flywheel is locked solid on the crank and several days of release oil has made no difference .... think this one may have to go on the back burner!

Re: Big end wear?
Thanks Charles. I am in Perth Scotland. Given that plastigauge is £29 a pack and I am pretty sure there must be more clearance than you state (as there is significant sideways 'wiggle') should I just replace the conrod and cap (if still available) or in such a circumstance is it necessary to have th...

Big end wear?
Stripping a badly neglected 125 in the hope of recovering it but after managing to free a seized piston and getting the barrel off I found the crankcase had a lot of rusty crud inside. There is some damage around the inside joint of the cases which I can only assume was done by the con rod end cap s...

Re: Jammed brass thumbscrews in alloy clamps
Thanks Charles, Will give that a go at the weekend. I just got hold of a 125 on which everything was jammed soild, carb, clamps, gear lever and barrel. I got the carb moving with release oil but it will need a strip and clean and after much soaking in WD40 and a bit of gentle persuasion got the pist...

Jammed brass thumbscrews in alloy clamps
I am sure this is a common question (apologies) but I can't spot an answer .... thumbscrews jammed solid and tried grease / brute force / heat from blowtorch but cant get much movement then jams solid again. Grease is being wiped off at clamp surface so not getting into thread. Any tips before brute...

Curlew carby
Will a Amal 418 11 (as fitted to the curlew) work on a silver century 75 or a model 90? If so are there any potential issues with using it? Thanks

Re: Best paint for block?
Well I used the Simoniz on a block (in situ) and it looks bonny but I have not fired it up yet. I also did another spare silver century block and a prop .... these got a baking in the oven as tin suggests. The prop was fine but some spots on the block bubbled (poor prep perhaps). I would however hav...
