Re: Gear oil coming out water inlet slots

Came into work this morning and found a 5 gallon pail of Mobil SHC 630 gear oil sitting beside my desk, that someone has given me. No idea yet who it was?!?!?!
It's rated as 1B on the copper strip test think I'll give it a go.
Viscosity cSt @ 100º C 28.5

Re: Gear oil coming out water inlet slots

Hey thanks Adian! That's some super helpful info. I have played with mixing grease with oil to thicken it and then added water to the finished mix to see if would emulsafy And it did. So that is also an option if I can't find the industrial weight oil. Your suggestions and info will really help in m...

Re: Gear oil coming out water inlet slots

Thanks Jon,
I'm going to have a look tomorrow and check the oil and see if water got in there from Saturday's outing.
The engine is run in fresh water only.
Then based on what I see, I'll make the call on replacement.

Re: Gear oil coming out water inlet slots

Thanks for the reply Oyster.
Are there replacement seals available? Or do I just keep using the engine with thicker oil in the box?

Gear oil coming out water inlet slots

Hi, So I replaced the oil in my gearbox with 90 weight thickened with a thickening agent, to make it closer to 140. I filled to level with the bottom of the filler drain hole. This is measured with the engine in the upright vertical position. After I was done I laid it down in the back of my truck( ...

Still can find it here. Will try using the marine outboard grade 90 with a viscosity thickening agent called honey in a can, AKA STP

Re: 140 gear oil in canada

No luck so far with the tractor farm suppliers. I'll ask my buddy who owns several antique vehicles about it. Google comes up blank for Canadian sources. I tried mixing in a bit of Grease with the 90 oil I have and it mixed really well I then put in some water to make sure it would emulsify and it d...

140 gear oil in canada

Would anyone have a suggestion as were to purchase straight 140 gear oil in Canada? Not really wanting to buy it from the UK due to exchange rate and postage cost. This is for a 1972 40 plus. I have asked at a local auto supply house. The fellow called several manufactures that distribute in Canada,...

Re: First time 40 plus owner

Thanks guys. Yup the mounting bracket is from a green 1950s Johnson Seahorse, that is no more. I sandblasted it and clear powder coated it. John from SoS has used mounts, but told me it would cost as much in postage to Canada as the part, some 20 odd pounds or more for shipping. Ordered a spare prop...

First time 40 plus owner

Hi there everyone! I just was given a 1972 40 plus and thought I would join this forum to learn. The engine was given to me by a guy that I work with. It was at his family cottage since new. They just sold the cottage this month and hadn't used the engine in about 20 years. I set it in a barrel, fil...
