Recoil start, after market or original?

I've just grabbed one of my engines that's been perched on a rack in my workshop for several years as it's just the right size for an auxiliary that I need for a new boat project I'm working on. The engine number is SJM 2095E5 which I think dates it at '56 '57 vintage. However, it's also fitted with...

Re: B.M.B. Mariner

It's identical! Wow, so I had wondered if mine was a home made one-off but obviously not. The number C379 looked like a Broads Aurhority number - and mine was last licensed in 1973 by the predecessor of the Broads Authority (Yarmouth Harbour Commisioners). I looked up you number in the Broads boats ...

Re: B.M.B. Mariner

Hi - could you post some pics of your boat and engine please? It would be great to see if there was another one like mine still in existence!! I had my prop apart recently as I was finishing the rebuild so may be able to help with some details of how it works that might be of use. I'm not sure if th...

Re: Multi-seagull power....

Excellent! Have you got any more info about the race? Couldn't find much at https://foweyharbour.co.uk/events-calendar/lerryn-seagull-race/ I used to stay at the camp site at Bodinnick regularly and put my boat out on their pontoon to pootle about Fowey and Polruan. Loved watching the clay boats bei...

That may be a much more practical idea...!

I'm wondering if this may turn out to be the aquatic equivalent of the 'Spruce Goose'

Re: Multi-seagull power....

Excellent! Well, I was thinking of maybe clamping a scaffold board across the transom of two boats - then we'd have a catamaran

Yes, Aligning the tillers is going to be interesting !

Multi-seagull power....

I've decided it's silly season. Between me and some chums we have 7 seagulls of various models.

The plan is to clamp a board across the transom of a suitable boat, hang all 7 engines and head off for a load and smoky pootle!
Should we survive the experience I'll post a video.

Cheers,
Bernie

B.M.B. Britannia

I managed to get the Mariner running on the bench after a bit of tweaking and like it so much I thought I'd see if I could find the outboard version. Just secured one but won't be able to collect it until May - in the mean time I was wondering if anyone knows the function of what looks like a regula...

Re: B.M.B. Mariner

I was hoping to be able to post a video clip of the engine running by now but no joy - I may need some help please. With a healthy spark and the timing as suggested I'm struggling to work out why it won't start. I managed to get it to fire for a couple of seconds by squirting easystart into the plug...

Re: B.M.B. Mariner

Perfect - just the info that I needed, many thanks.
Had a go at starting to day but no joy. I'll reset using these figures over the weekend and try again.

Re: B.M.B. Mariner

Coil back from rewind - we now have sparks! Does anyone have any timing info on these engines please? There are some likely looking numbers stamped on the flywheel visible when the plate is removed but no apparent reference point for alignment if they are intended for timing. I'll try a first start ...

Re: B.M.B. Mariner

Looking quite pretty now. Just waiting for the coil to come back from a rewind and we'll go for the first start since about 1974!

Re: B.M.B. Mariner

Brilliant thanks.

I'm not sure of the age of my engine as I haven't been able to find a reference to the serial numbers but think I'll start conservatively with a richer mix after the rebuild.

I'll post a link when its running again.
