Re: Black spark plug

Rbt put one of your pistons in warm caustic for an hour & let us know the result. "I can see into the future" did the aluminium start to dissolve? Before the black crap did? which is a perfectly normal by product of a 2 stroke internal combustion engine. Stop! This may be a bit of a j...

Thanks Charles for your reply.
The tank in question replaced an old leaky steel tank and at least it does not leak any more. Will keep my eye out for a better looking tank.

REMOVING DENTS FROM BRASS TANKS.

I recently purchased a dented brass tank for a forty plus. Aren't they all? It would be good to see a reliable little motor looking at her best. I seem to remember that there was somebody who would saw the ends off the tank, beat out the dents and braise it back together. Does anybody have any infor...

In the absence of a supply of SAE 140 could a concoction of say EP90 and a slug of grease to thicken it up do the job? I am not advocating that this could be the norm especially here in the UK SAE 140 is still reasonably available. Perhaps some more knowledgeable forumites could give their opinion. ...

Thanks John. Bing carburettors. Float needle.

:D
Thanks John for your prompt attention in supplying the parts for the 40 plus.
Hopefully we will be out at Hythe Quay this weekend to give the Seagull a try before our holiday on the Broads.

Regards.

Re: Serious challenge to the Seagull reputation!

I see in this month's Boat Mart magazine, in an answer to a chap enquiring about Seagulls and boat, that the resident writer states: "From experience I can say that the Suzuki 2.2 equates to the 4HP Seagull in terms of thrust..." Well we can't have this, can we. I have issued a challenge ...

[quote="Ian Malcolm"]As you only have to undo two bolts to remove the powerhead from the leg or pull the pivot pin to take the engine off the bracket.(unquote) I have drilled the clamp where the L shaped pin clips shut and am able to put a padlock through to secure the pin. I also have a s...

I have run a Seagull Forty Featherweight for two years, some twenty seven years ago, five weeks a year, covering a great part of the British canal system and running for about six hours a day. I used straight SAE 30 oil with no problems. After a two week holiday I would take out the plug, give it a ...

You sound as if you may be an old motorcyclist as I was. We always improvised if we could not get what we wanted for our old bikes. I have also improvised a throttle cable from a pushbike gear cable. The only problem I found was that the cable was stainless steel and did not take kindly to being sol...

It may take a few flushings with parafine (kerosene to our Stateside Brothers) and run it for a minute or two between flushings to churn the grease into the parafine. Afterall, if it has been run with grease, a couple of minutes with parafine will not do any damage. I think I have spelt parafine wro...

No. I would not recommend enlarging the water intake slots. They are there to protect the pump impeller. As long as you are not getting steam out of your engine block outlet don't worry. These little old engines run a bit cold anyway. Although I have never attempted to renew a broken impeller it may...

Most Seagulls rely in part to the motion of the water past the water inlet for some of their water flow through the power head. You can only really tell if the pump is working properly if the engine is in a circular tank or on the back of a boat. I once had a forty featherweight bought brand new and...

. Should I test an engine in the bath whilst ladywife is in there, to save on water and give her a jacuzzi effect? Rick. You could try this if you want to give Her Indoors grounds for divorce. Must go down as unreasonable behaviour. It all depends on if you owned the Seagull before you met her. If ...
