Re: Retrofit sealed gearbox onto forty
Thank you! I agree with the last sentiment then. Not that the work is too awful to consider but there seem to be enough Seagulls around!

Retrofit sealed gearbox onto forty
Is it possible to retrofit a lip-seal gearbox (or housing?) onto an unsealed forty?
I know I read a discussion about this, but I am really sorry that I can't remember where or what the outcome was

Re: UK roller-bearing forty gearbox
Thanks for the clarification! Maybe a mod could delete this post then. Ah sorry, just realised where I got confused. So the FNR and clutch-having seagulls would have (/maybe) had lip seals fitted? I was wondering if I could retrofit a gearbox housing that has a lip seal, to avoid bleeding gearbox oil.

Re: crankcase weep + magneto base moving
I finally got the flywheel off and it looks like somebody had partially threaded the dimple, but the screw wasn't going in far enough to engage with the threads. If it was supposed to have a tapered end to sit in the dimple then somebody's cut it off flat. I ended up drilling out the magneto base th...

UK roller-bearing forty gearbox
I'm after a sealed-type gearbox that I can swap in for my bronze bearing type. In the UK is best I think.

Re: crankcase weep + magneto base moving
[...] If the flywheel plate is loose when the screw is tight it will require a little work! Drill out the recess with a 11/32” drill bit and install a 3BA washer this will securely lock the plate into place and can be removed in the future. <- https://www.classicseagulls.co.uk/index.php?_a=category...

Yeah I more or less realised it just after I wrote that. Sorry!
Proper job sounds good.

Gearbox clean
The gearbox on my recently bought forty plus looks to contain a mix of grease and sand. Is there a quick way to flush it or will the end cap definitely be coming off?

Re: crankcase weep + magneto base moving
I think lapping compound is still around! Okay thanks, that makes sense now. I'll get that screw unstuck haha. Reading this, and other advice, makes me think that there's a finite set of possible failures with these motors---all of which are known. Maybe they could be compiled into a list with codes...

crankcase weep + magneto base moving
Hi all, new seagull person. I have a 40 that looks to have been kept clean and tidy, and which seems to start and run well. I get a slow oil weep from the crankcase, looks like from the seam between the two halves, and maybe again at the bottom of the crankcase where the driveshaft leg bolts on. It'...
